Summary: In this study, it was found that black raspberry extract (BRBE) enhances synthesis of glutathione (GSH) and inhibits DBP-induced DNA damage in human oral leukoplakia and squamous cell carcinoma cells. LC-MS/MS analysis showed increased levels of DBPDE-GSH conjugate and decreased DNA damage in cells treated with BRBE followed by DBPDE.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is a deadly malignancy, with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and esophageal adenocarcinoma being the two main types. Tobacco and alcohol use, along with limited intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, contribute to the prevalence of esophageal cancer. A food-based approach can help prevent esophageal cancer by targeting multiple processes in carcinogenesis. Black raspberries and strawberries have been found to be potent inhibitors of esophageal cancer.

Summary: This study investigated the preventive action of Ficus dubia latex extract (FDLE) on rat colorectal carcinogenesis and its mechanisms. The results showed that FDLE could reduce the level of MAM in rat colonic lumen and inhibit DNA methylation in colonic mucosal cells. Additionally, FDLE modulated inflammation and suppressed the growth of aberrant colonic mucosal cells, leading to the retardation of ACF multiplicity.

Summary: This study compared the metabolism of AFB(1) in mouse, rat, and human primary hepatocytes, revealing differences in toxification and detoxification mechanisms. Mouse hepatocytes exhibited the fastest metabolism, mainly forming aflatoxin P-1, while human cells produced higher levels of aflatoxin M-1. In addition to glutathione conjugation, phase I metabolism was found to play an important role in AFB(1) detoxification.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the consumption of a diet containing freeze-dried black raspberries (BRB) can inhibit DNA damage and carcinogenesis. The researchers tested the effects of BRB extracts (BRBE) on DNA repair capacity using the HeLa cell extract system and found that BRBE enhances nucleotide excision repair (NER) activity and increases the expression of important NER factors. These findings suggest that BRBE can improve the repair of bulky and non-bulky DNA lesions.

Summary: The aim of this study was to extract anthocyanin-enriched fractions from black raspberry pomace using ultrasound-assisted extraction and the Particles from Gas-Saturated Solutions process. The results showed that the amplitude of ultrasound had a significant effect on extraction yield and total phenolic content. The high-performance techniques used in this study allowed for the production of natural fractions with desirable characteristics for the development of nutraceuticals and food formulations.

Summary: The study found that mice infected with MmuPV1 and treated with the tobacco carcinogen DBP have a higher risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma in oral tissues, compared to mice treated with virus or carcinogen individually. Virally-infected epithelium exhibited strong levels of viral DNA/RNA and viral protein staining, while areas of SCC showed reduced viral DNA staining but strong RNA signals.

Summary: A certain diet can enhance the activity of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) in the intestinal tract, which is responsible for maintaining intestinal barrier homeostasis. This is possibly achieved through the role of certain dietary substrates as CYP1A1/1B1 substrates, which increase the half-life of potent AHR ligands. The gut bacterial metabolite urolithin A (UroA) has been identified as one of these substrates, and its intake can lead to increased AHR activity in key barrier tissues.
