Epstein-Barr virus microRNAs in the pathogenesis of human cancers

Brunno Felipe R. Caetano, Beatrice Adrianne S. Jorge, Barbara Grasiele Mueller-Coan, Deilson Elgui de Oliveira

Summary: EBV is a gamma-herpesvirus linked to various human cancers, with its miRNAs modulating carcinogenesis and serving as potential markers for monitoring EBV-associated cancers.

SNPs in genes encoding for IL-10, TNF-α, and NFκB p105/p50 are associated with clinical prognostic factors for patients with Hodgkin lymphoma

Rafael Dezen Gaiolla, Marcelo Padovani de Toledo Moraes, Deilson Elgui de Oliveira

Summary: The study evaluated SNPs in genes encoding key cytokines in Hodgkin lymphoma and found that certain genotypes were associated with prognostic parameters in cHL patients. This study also described the association of SNP/iNFKB1 with clinical features of the disease for the first time.

Latent Membrane Protein 1 (LMP1) from Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Strains M81 and B95.8 Modulate miRNA Expression When Expressed in Immortalized Human Nasopharyngeal Cells

Barbara G. Mueller Coan, Ethel Cesarman, Marcio Luis Acencio, Deilson Elgui de Oliveira

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of LMP1 derived from different strains of EBV on miRNA regulation in nasopharyngeal cells. The results showed that different strains of LMP1 led to differential expression of specific miRNAs, and in silico analysis provided insights into the molecular effects of LMP1 expression on cellular processes and signaling pathways.

Small extracellular vesicles: Non-negligible vesicles in tumor progression, diagnosis, and therapy

Xinru Zhou, Yin Jia, Chuanbin Mao, Shanrong Liu

Summary: Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), such as exosomes, have emerged as crucial targets for liquid biopsy and promising drug delivery vehicles in tumor progression. They can serve as biomarkers for tumor diagnosis and as drug carriers for cancer treatment.

Epigenetic inhibition of CTCF by HN1 promotes dedifferentiation and stemness of anaplastic thyroid cancer

Zongfu Pan, Xixuan Lu, Tong Xu, Jinming Chen, Lisha Bao, Ying Li, Yingying Gong, Yulu Che, Xiaozhou Zou, Zhuo Tan, Ping Huang, Minghua Ge

Summary: This study uncovered the emerging role of HN1 in promoting dedifferentiation of anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) cells. HN1 negatively regulated the thyroid differentiation markers and had an inhibitory effect on the transcriptional activation of CTCF, thereby influencing the chromatin accessibility of thyroid differentiation genes.

Autophagy machinery in glioblastoma: The prospect of cell death crosstalk and drug resistance with bioinformatics analysis

Yi Qin, Shengjun Xiong, Jun Ren, Gautam Sethi

Summary: Autophagy plays an important regulatory role in glioblastoma, and its dysregulation can lead to drug resistance and radioresistance. It also affects stem cell characteristics, overall growth, and metastasis. Therefore, autophagy is a promising target for glioblastoma therapy.

Elevated 2-oxoglutarate antagonizes DNA damage responses in cholangiocarcinoma chemotherapy through regulating aspartate beta-hydroxylase

Katsuya Nagaoka, Xuewei Bai, Dan Liu, Kevin Cao, Joud Mulla, Chengcheng Ji, Hongze Chen, Muhammad Azhar Nisar, Amalia Bay, William Mueller, Grace Hildebrand, Jin-Song Gao, Shaolei Lu, Hiroko Setoyama, Yasuhito Tanaka, Jack R. Wands, Chiung-Kuei Huang

Summary: This study found that serum 2-OG levels in cholangiocarcinoma patients are associated with the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Patients with progressive disease showed significantly higher levels of serum 2-OG compared to stable disease and partial response patients. The study also revealed that overexpression of ASPH mimics the effects of 2-OG, and knockdown of ASPH improves chemotherapy. Targeting ASPH enhances the effects of chemotherapy by modulating ATM and ATR, two key regulators of DDRs.
