Summary: Sustainable agriculture poses challenges to human health, particularly in terms of managing plant diseases caused by climate change and emerging pathogens. The use of environmentally friendly biopesticides/biofertilizers and nanomaterials shows promise in mitigating the impact of these challenges. Nanotechnology can reduce chemical use, nutrient loss, and increase crop yield through the use of nanofertilizers and nanopesticides. Nanosensors can monitor soil quality and maintain the health of agricultural plants. Despite ongoing large-scale production and field testing, information suggests that nano-agrochemicals improve uptake, efficiency, targeted delivery, and reduce leaching and pollution. This review summarizes the impact of nanotechnology in agriculture.

Summary: Nanoparticles loaded with atrazine exhibit better weed control efficacy with faster absorption rates and higher inhibition of photosystem II activity compared to the commercial formulation. The nanoencapsulation potentiates post-emergent herbicidal activity of atrazine, particularly in field conditions, providing a two-fold increase in weed control compared to commercial atrazine. The design of this carrier system enables improvements in herbicide performance in the field with reduced risk of environmental losses due to faster absorption.

Summary: A nanocellulose incorporated oleogel encapsulation system was developed for controlled release of active agents, using 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) as an example core ingredient. The release rate of 5-ASA was modified by the incorporation of different types, concentrations, and volumes of nanocellulose. The new quantification method for 5-ASA developed in this study is simpler and faster compared to currently available methods.

Summary: Lignin sulfonate waste from paper pulping was modified to obtain benzoylated lignin sulfonates of adjustable hydrophilicity (BLS). When combined with the fungicide difenoconazole (Di), lignin-based, non-crosslinked nanoparticles were obtained through solvent exchange or solvent evaporation. The formulation of Di in lignin-based nanocarriers improved the sustained release, UV stability, and foliar retention of Di compared to commercial formulations. Bioactivity assay showed high activities and duration against strawberry anthracnose for Di@BLS5. Overall, constructing a fungicide delivery nano-platform using BLS is a promising way to develop sustainable formulations.

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.
