Summary: Globally, fertilizer caking during transport and storage causes various issues, including breakdown, dust, blockages, and inconsistent application. Coatings, especially those with hydrophobic properties, can reduce moisture uptake and caking while maintaining nutrient release. In this study, wax coatings, both natural and synthetic, were applied onto fertilizer granules with powders to create surface roughness, which effectively reduced contact between condensed water droplets and the surface, leading to lower moisture ingress. The adhesive strength and nutrient release rate were evaluated using laser surface microscopy. The results showed that wax-only coatings reduced moisture uptake by up to 30%, while coatings with wax and rougheners achieved reductions between 56% and 80%. Beeswax coatings with micronutrient rougheners reduced moisture uptake by over 65% while ensuring uninterrupted nutrient supply. Therefore, these hydrophobic coatings can enhance the physical characteristics of fertilizer without compromising nutrient release kinetics.

Summary: A novel biodegradable polymer slow-release fertilizer containing nutrient nitrogen and phosphorus was prepared in this study, inspired by the degradation of biodegradable polymers. The fertilizer can slowly release nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients under the action of microorganisms, effectively increasing the soil available phosphorus content. The study provides a simple method to prepare sustainable agriculture-promoting slow-release N and P nutrients.

Summary: In this study, biobased formulations using biochar materials and oxidized cellulose nanofibers were developed as coating agents for phosphate fertilizer. The results show that biochar materials can reduce the hydrophilicity of cellulose materials and the addition of montmorillonite can affect the porous structure of biochar. The developed coating material can increase the crushing strength of fertilizer granules, improve the soil water holding capacity, and reduce phosphorus leaching in the soil.

Summary: In this study, a new type of slow-release fertilizer with high water retention, named HS-BCF, was fabricated by incorporating hydrotalcite and starch into traditional biochar-based compound fertilizers (BCF). The results showed that the incorporation of hydrotalcite and starch into BCF significantly increased the soil water-retention ratio and reduced the leaching of nutrients. Kinetic analysis revealed that the release of nutrients from HS-BCF was attributed to the coupling of the diffusion-controlled and relaxation-controlled mechanism. The pot experiments demonstrated that HS-BCF had higher N-P-K utilization efficiencies compared to BCF due to better synchronization between nutrient release and plant uptake.

Summary: Phosphaterock and struvite dispersion in a polysulfide matrix provides a sustainable alternative for phosphorous fertilization, as it can enhance P dissolution and control its release, while also serving as a sulfur fertilizer. The study investigates the permeability mechanism and factors affecting P diffusion from PS composites. The results show that the PS composites exhibit higher P release and availability in soil compared to pure ST.

Summary: The release characteristics of coated fertilizers are limited due to their hydrophilic nature and micropores. Researchers have improved the surface hydrophobicity of coating materials by using superhydrophobic halloysite nanotubes (SHTs). This enhancement significantly improved the nitrogen-release properties of the coated fertilizers, providing a new idea for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly bio-based controlled-release fertilizers.

Summary: The nutrient release mechanism of bio-oil polymer coated controlled-release fertilizer (BCRF) was studied, revealing that the channels in the coating layer play a crucial role in controlling the release rate. Adjusting the ratio of bio-oil polymer and coating technology can improve the controlled-release performance of BCRF.

Summary: Excessive use of nitrogenous fertilizers leads to wasteful expense and environmental degradation. In this study, a urea-hydroxyapatite nano fertilizer (UHAPF) was synthesized, which showed controlled nitrogen release and improved plant growth when combined with beneficial bacteria. Nanofertilizers also enhanced nutrient uptake and cannabinoid production in industrial cannabis.

Summary: The application of boron (B) fertilizers is challenging due to solubility issues, but a new type of coated fertilizer showed slower release rates and reduced leaching, resulting in higher crop uptake and yield. These novel compound fertilizers released boron at a rate slow enough to prevent large leaching losses but fast enough to meet plant demand.
