Summary: This study compared laparoscopic sentinel node navigation surgery (LSNNS) with laparoscopic standard gastrectomy (LSG) in terms of postoperative complications, long-term survival, and quality of life (QOL). The study found that LSNNS did not show superiority to LSG in 3-year disease-free survival (3y-DFS). However, there were no differences in 3-year disease-specific survival (3y-DSS) and 3-year overall survival (3y-OS) after rescue surgery in cases of recurrence/metachronous gastric cancer. LSNNS also showed better long-term QOL and nutrition than LSG.

Summary: For patients with T1-2 breast cancer and 1-2 macrometastatic sentinel lymph nodes, breast-conserving surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy only, and adjuvant therapy showed similar survival rates and recurrence rates compared to axillary lymph node dissection. Mastectomy patients who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy alone also had comparable outcomes without the need for axillary lymph node dissection.

Summary: The study suggests that the laparoscopic ICG-guided SLN strategy may be a low-risk and time-saving method to avoid laparoscopic LLND in cases with negative lateral pelvic lymph nodes. The lateral SLNs were successfully identified in 76.2% of the patients, and all dissected lateral non-SLNs were negative in patients without SLN tumor metastasis.

Summary: This study evaluated the rate of non-sentinel lymph node (NSLN) positivity and factors influencing this in patients with a positive sentinel lymph node (SLN) following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). The results showed a high rate of nodal positivity on completion axillary lymph node dissection (cALND) in the setting of positive SLN after NAC, supporting the current standard of routine cALND. In patients with cN+ disease, NSLN positivity varied based on tumor biology, multicentricity/multifocality, number of positive SLNs, and SLN metastasis size.

Summary: The ENDO-3 trial aims to evaluate the value of sentinel node biopsy in the surgical management of endometrial cancer, comparing its effectiveness and potential harms with no retroperitoneal node dissection. The trial design is a phase III, open-label, two-arm, multistage, randomized non-inferiority trial with the primary endpoint being surgical recovery and disease-free survival at 4.5 years.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a trend towards less aggressive surgical management of axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer. This study evaluated the effectiveness of evaluating axillary sentinel lymph nodes and found that serial sectioning at 2-mm intervals reduced false negatives due to macrometastatic disease. Discordant cases were mostly false negatives detected on the first permanent section level due to sampling errors.

Summary: This study found that performing only SLNB in breast cancer patients with cN positive pathology before neoadjuvant therapy but cN negative pathology after SLNB was associated with lower locoregional recurrence rates. There were significant differences in axillary recurrence and survival rates based on clinical and pathological lymph node status.

Summary: In women with early-stage cervical cancer, sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping shows high accuracy in tumors <= 20 mm and high sensitivity in tumors > 20 mm when adhering to the algorithm. In comparison, FDG-PET/CT appears limited in nodal staging of women with early-stage cervical cancer.

Summary: This nonrandomized clinical trial evaluates whether an ultrasmall, molecularly targeted core-shell silica nanoparticle can safely and reliably identify optically avid SLNs in head and neck melanoma during fluorescence-guided biopsy. The study found that nanoparticle-based fluorescence-guided SLN biopsy in head and neck melanoma was feasible and safe, offering promise for improving lymphatic mapping and SLN biopsy procedures.

Summary: The study analyzed the treatment and pathological results of patients included in the SERC trial, a multicenter randomized non-inferiority phase-3 trial comparing completion axillary lymph node dissection (cALND) with sentinel lymph node biopsy alone in breast cancer patients. Patients with one or two involved sentinel nodes by micro- or macro-metastases may not require cALND, but further research is needed for those with more than two involved nodes.

Summary: This study investigated the mediating effects of illness perception on psychological distress in patients with newly diagnosed gastric cancer. It also identified the factors influencing illness perception in these patients. The results showed that social support, physical symptoms, and satisfaction with patient education significantly influenced illness perception, and illness perception fully mediated the relationship between these variables and psychological distress.

Summary: Although most ingested foreign bodies do not cause serious complications, in rare cases, elderly individuals with cognitive decline may accidentally swallow a blister pack while attempting to take medication. When a blister pack is separated into individual parts, the sharp edges of the separated parts can cause significant damage if ingested. We present a case report of an elderly patient who unintentionally ingested a blister pack, resulting in esophageal perforation and eventual death.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the outcomes of laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) with open total gastrectomy (OTG). There was no significant difference in short-term outcomes between the two groups, and the 3-year disease-free survival and 5-year overall survival rates were also similar. Thus, LTG could be an alternative to OTG.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive investigation on the failure to rescue (FTR) after radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer patients and explored the associations between FTR and clinicopathologic factors, operative features, and complication types. The study found that older age, high ASA score, and serosa exposure were associated with FTR. Furthermore, patients who underwent gastrectomy in recent years had lower mortality rates when complications occurred. This study is important as it reveals the risk factors for FTR and provides reference for clinical treatment.

Summary: Metabolic/bariatric surgery is the most effective method for treating morbid obesity and its related comorbidities. It not only results in short-term weight loss, but also helps maintain a lower body weight for decades, improving patients' quality of life and life expectancy. Patients need to understand the likely outcomes of the surgery, especially the amount of weight loss, in order to make informed decisions. Healthcare professionals also need reliable prediction models to assess patients' weight loss progress.
