Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are considered to be the leading cause of death worldwide. Inadequate fruit and vegetable intake have been recognized as a risk factor for almost all NCDs (type 2 diabetes mellitus, cancer, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases). The main aim of this review is to examine the possible protective effect that fruit and vegetable consumption or their bioactive compounds may have on the development of NCDs such as atherosclerosis. The accumulated evidence on the protective effects of adequate consumption of fruits and vegetables in some cases, or the lack of evidence in others, are summarized in the present review. The main conclusion of this review is that well-designed, large-scale, long-term studies are needed to truly understand the role fruit and vegetable consumption or their bioactive compounds have in atherosclerosis.

Three-dimensional electroanatomically guided slow pathway elimination is associated with procedural improvements and clinical benefit in atrioventricular node reentrant tachycardia patients

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of a three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping (3D-EAM)-based strategy targeting slow pathway (SP) elimination with the conventional fluoroscopic approach in atrioventricular node reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) ablation. The results showed that 3D-EAM improved procedural parameters, reduced fluoroscopy time and dose, and increased SP elimination frequency. Follow-up results demonstrated lower recurrence rates and redo procedure rates in the 3D-EAM-based group.

Summary: This study found that excessive visceral adipose tissue is associated with increased secretion of pro-inflammatory molecules, leading to systemic inflammation and obesity-related metabolic disturbances. The reduction in visceral adipose tissue is associated with improvements in various inflammatory and adiposity markers, especially insulin, c-peptide, and PAI-1 levels, which may contribute to a decrease in cardiometabolic disturbances observed in obesity.

Summary: Anemia and lower levels of anemia markers are associated with inferior cognitive function, worse executive function, and poorer physical component of quality of life. These effects are particularly pronounced in individuals with diabetes. Dietary iron intake does not influence these outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to describe dietary nutrient intake and diet quality during pregnancy and evaluate the association between high adherence to the Mediterranean diet and a more adequate intake of micronutrients. The results showed that pregnant women with high adherence to the Mediterranean diet had a lower proportion of inadequate macro and micronutrient intake. They also had a higher intake of protein, monounsaturated fatty acids, fiber, vitamins (B1, B9, C, D), calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphor, potassium, essential fatty acids, and a-linolenic acid, and a lower intake of a-linoleic acid and trans fatty acids compared to those with low adherence to the Mediterranean diet.

Best Practice Guide for Cryoballoon Ablation in Atrial Fibrillation: The Compilation Experience of More than 1000 Procedures

Summary: Nowadays, cryoballoon (CB) has become an established alternative to radio frequency (RF) ablation for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), with the ability to isolate PVs in a single application. In a study on over 1000 consecutive patients, our center optimized the CB PVI procedure. It is expected that future guidelines will recommend CB as the first-line PVI for patients with paroxysmal AF and a class I indication. In a long-term follow-up of the EARLY-AF trial, CB showed a lower incidence of persistent atrial fibrillation compared to anti-arrhythmic drugs.
