As emerging countries are both major contributors to global carbon emissions growth and global economic growth, the sharp contradiction between economy and carbon emissions has seriously hindered the sustainable development of emerging countries and is not conducive to the realization of global emission reduction targets. This work takes BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), the representatives of emerging countries, as an example to investigate the decoupling state between economic growth and carbon emissions, and to uncover the driving factors behind these decoupling. The results show (i) Russia and South Africa have experienced the longest time of strong decoupling, indicating that the decoupling in these two countries is better than that in other countries. China, India and South Africa was characterized by expansive coupling, weak decoupling and expansive negative decoupling, respectively. (ii) The labor effect and investment effect have contributed to the carbon emissions growth in the BRICS, and the reasons for the carbon emissions changes in Russia, India, China and South Africa are strongly consistent, while Brazil has a different performance. (iii) The investment decoupling effect has hindered the decoupling process in Russia, South Africa, China and India, but has promoted the decoupling process in Brazil; while the energy intensity effect is the driving force in the decoupling process in most countries. Finally, the policy recommendations for the different decoupling status of each country were put forward. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Planning for an Inclusive Entrepreneurial Ecosystem COVID-19 and Business Resilience in Underserved Communities

Qingfang Wang

Summary: This study examined the experiences of Latina-owned businesses (LaOBs) in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic in inland Southern California using an evolutionary resilience perspective. The findings revealed that the short-term crisis attributed to COVID-19 is rooted in long-term underinvestment in entrepreneurship and business development in underserved communities. Socioeconomic vulnerability at both the individual and community levels affects LaOBs' resilience, which is also influenced by pre-pandemic networking and institutional structures. Continuous investment in technology, education, and social network building in underserved communities, as well as fostering an inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem, is necessary to build preparedness and resilience among racial and ethnic minority-owned businesses.

Economic complexity and ecological footprint: The role of energy structure, industrial structure, and labor force

Qiang Wang, Ting Yang, Rongrong Li

Summary: Existing studies have shown that the economic complexity index (ECI) has a significant impact on environmental quality, but they have not taken into account the mediating effect of other key factors on the relationship between the two, thus neglecting the structural break and non-linear characteristics of the relationship between ECI and environmental quality. To fill this research gap, this study constructs a decomposition framework and multiple panel threshold regression models based on an extended STIRPAT model using panel data from 36 OECD countries. The results suggest a nonlinear relationship between ECI and ecological footprint, with the energy consumption structure, industrial structure, and human capital acting as key mediators. The study also proposes targeted policy recommendations to mitigate the effects of economic complexity on environmental quality, focusing on energy structure, industrial structure, and labor force.

The response of soil respiration to land-use change depends on soil microbial community being regulated by edaphic factors in the Loess Plateau, China

Lei Zhang, Qiang Wang, Junping Lv, Chao Zhang

Summary: Land-use change has a significant influence on soil respiration in terrestrial ecosystems, with soil microbes playing a critical role in soil carbon cycling. However, the specific mechanisms linking changes in soil microbial properties to variations in respiration rate during land-use change are poorly understood, especially in the Loess Plateau, China. This study analyzed the characteristics of respiration rate and soil microbial community following a land-use change from farmland to plantation/grassland using a soil CO2 flux system and gene sequencing. Afforestation altered soil microbial diversity and composition, primarily influenced by pH, temperature, organic matter, nitrate, alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen, and available phosphorus. Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Thaumarchaeota were identified as biomarkers in farmland soil at the phylum level. Afforestation also significantly decreased respiration rate, which was closely related to Shannon's index, Simpson's index, and certain microbial taxa including Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Nitrospirae, and Acidobacteria. Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were particularly identified as important drivers of high respiration rate in farmland soil. Additionally, microbial interactions were likely an important factor affecting respiration rate. These findings highlight the influence of soil microbial communities regulated by physicochemical properties on the response of respiration to land-use change in the Loess Plateau, China.

Spatial spillover effects of official development assistance on environmental pressure in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries

Qiang Wang, Jiaqi Guo, Rongrong Li

Summary: Impoverished sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is facing increasing environmental pressure from global environmental changes. It is widely accepted that economic development in SSA countries can lead to environmental pressure, but there is a research gap on the impact of economic assistance on environmental pressure in SSA countries and the spatial spillovers it causes. To address this, a dynamic spatial Dubin panel model was used to analyze the panel data from 34 SSA countries. The results indicate that economic assistance has a positive stimulating effect on environmental pressures in recipient countries, with neighboring countries being affected due to regional correlation effects. It is crucial to develop joint regional prevention and control policies to address the spillover effects of environmental pressures.
