This paper investigates the role of globalization, especially so-called threshold effect, in convergence of energy intensity along the Belt and Road countries during the period 1992-2016. Different from the previous studies, which primarily consider the linear effect and neglect the cross-sectional dependence of convergences, we construct a panel smooth transition regression model in this work, simultaneously taking dynamics, heterogeneity, non-linear and cross-sectional dependence characteristics into account. The results show that there exists a non-linear globalization threshold effect on the unconditional beta convergence, conditional beta convergence and club convergence of energy intensity, and the convergence becomes faster when the globalization level is above the threshold. These findings imply that a rise in the level of globalization contributes to the convergence of energy intensity in the Belt and Road countries; thus, governments in such countries could reduce energy intensity through increasing the level of globalization, which may in turn be achieved by deep cross-national cooperation in economic, social and political areas. Coronavirus: The Not-So-Trivial Loss of Well-Being

Hongbo Duan, Zhilin Huang, Jie Jiang, Xi Ming, Dingxuan Zhang, Shouyang Wang

Summary: The COVID-19 outbreak has had a significant negative impact on happiness of Chinese residents, especially in regions with high risk levels and different income levels. Female sentiment is more sensitive to the epidemic than male sentiment. The timing of major public events and alerts announced by the World Health Organization play a critical role in determining self-reported happiness.

The role of national carbon pricing in phasing out China's coal power

Jianlei Mo, Weirong Zhang, Qiang Tu, Jiahai Yuan, Hongbo Duan, Ying Fan, Jiaofeng Pan, Jian Zhang, Zhixu Meng

Summary: As the country with the world's largest coal power capacity, China is implementing a national carbon market to reduce carbon emissions. Research shows that while China's coal plants have a long lifespan, the implementation of carbon pricing will reduce their remaining lifespan and decrease CO2 emissions.

Limiting global warming to below 1.5 °C from 2 °C: An energy-system-based multi-model analysis for China

Jiali Zheng, Hongbo Duan, Sheng Zhou, Shouyang Wang, Ji Gao, Kejun Jiang, Shuo Gao

Summary: The study highlights the significance of reducing the temperature-increase limit to below 1.5 degrees C and the challenges China faces in combating global warming. By utilizing multi-model analysis, the study provides insights on the impact of stricter warming-limit goals on emissions reduction, energy consumption, policy costs, and technology progress. The findings suggest that greater technological progress can result in larger contributions to CO2 emission reductions when shifting from 2 degrees C to 1.5 degrees C.

Quantifying the implied risk for newly-built coal plant to become stranded asset by carbon pricing

Jianlei Mo, Lianbiao Cui, Hongbo Duan

Summary: This study quantifies the risk of newly-built coal plants becoming stranded assets under carbon pricing, focusing on the case of China as a heavily coal-dependent nation introducing a national carbon market. Results show that carbon pricing increases the risk of coal plants becoming stranded assets and shortens their lifespan.

Regional trade agreement burdens global carbon emissions mitigation

Kailan Tian, Yu Zhang, Yuze Li, Xi Ming, Shangrong Jiang, Hongbo Duan, Cuihong Yang, Shouyang Wang

Summary: Regional trade agreements (RTAs) are widely used to promote international trade, but their environmental effects have not been well studied. This study evaluates the economic effects of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and estimates that it will lead to increased CO2 emissions. However, deeper trade liberalization can help mitigate the burdens.

Valuing the impact of climate change on China's economic growth

Hongbo Duan, Deyu Yuan, Zongwu Cai, Shouyang Wang

Summary: This study systematically evaluates the economic impact of climate change in the mid-latitude regions of China using a 27-year panel dataset. The results show significant climate-economic relationships, with temperature, rainfall, and humidity changes affecting output. Higher temperatures are associated with decreased output, while increased rainfall has a positive impact. Using integrated assessment models, it is projected that climate change could lead to a 4.23% reduction in China's GDP by 2100.

WHAT MITIGATION CAN ASIA CONTRIBUTE TO THE PARIS AGREEMENT GOALS?

Hongbo Duan, Jiahua Pan, Tsvetan G. Tsvetanov, Bing Zhang

Summary: Asia, particularly China, has experienced rapid economic growth and will be a significant source of future greenhouse gas emissions. Despite declines in emissions from industrialized countries, substantial mitigation actions are needed in Asia to meet the Paris targets. This study provides insights and fresh perspectives on policy making and climate governance in Asian economies, contributing to the existing literature on climate economic methodologies and regional climate policy research.

Perspective for China's carbon capture and storage under the Paris agreement climate pledges

Jiali Zheng, Hongbo Duan, Yongna Yuan

Summary: This study examines the significance of enhancing warm-limiting targets for climate change mitigation, particularly in relation to China's carbon capture and storage (CCS) efforts. Using a multi-model analysis, the study explores how China can contribute to the global 1.5? target while achieving its carbon neutrality goal. The findings indicate that these enhanced targets will accelerate China's carbon peak and neutrality, with a significant decrease in carbon emissions by the end of the century. It is estimated that China's negative carbon emissions will contribute nearly one-fifth of global negative emissions in 2100, with CCS-captured emissions accounting for 14%.

A systematic review of electricity market liberalisation and its alignment with industrial consumer participation: A comparison between the Nordics and China

Nicolas Fatras, Zheng Ma, Hongbo Duan, Bo Norregaard Jorgensen

Summary: The alignment between electricity market liberalisation and consumer participation is crucial for improving market efficiency, increasing system flexibility, and supporting the transition to a low-carbon electricity system. This paper examines the alignment status between market liberalisation properties and industrial consumer participation criteria in the Nordic region and China, and finds that the Nordic electricity market provides better participation incentives for cost savings, while the Chinese market offers easier adoption and better long-term financial overviews for consumers. Market context strongly influences the preferred market type for consumer participation, and market intervention is essential to ensure consumer-side market participation.

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.
