Summary: In order to address declining water resources and low agricultural water productivity, it is important to improve efficiency in agricultural production and water usage. This study evaluated the effectiveness of irrigating rice fields in Nigeria using a stochastic frontier analysis. The results showed that farmers using canal irrigation had an average yield of 4.69 tons/hectare, while farmers using tube wells had an average yield of 4.94 tons/hectare. The study recommends enhancing extension services to provide training on water use efficiency and the transfer of farming technologies to rice farmers.

Summary: Sustainable agricultural practices are increasingly important for global and national environmental policies and economy. This study compared the sustainability of grape production under integrated and organic management using multiple indicators. The results showed that organic management was more beneficial for most environmental aspects of the agroecosystem compared to integrated management, without affecting grape yield.

Summary: Our study examines the relationship between bank business models (BBMs) and the cost and profit efficiency of cooperative banks from fifteen European countries over the period 2010-2020. We identify five BBMs and suggest that cooperative banks pursue their goals by implementing different strategies. Moreover, our results mainly suggest that more retail-oriented banks are more cost and profit efficient, while market-oriented banks are less.

Summary: This paper measures the industrial land use efficiency (ILUE) in China and explores its spatial-temporal characteristics and influencing factors using a stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) method. The results show that ILUE levels in China are increasing, with the east having the highest efficiency and the west surpassing the northeast in recent years. Factors such as enterprise ownership structure, industrial specialization, and local financial pressure play key roles in influencing ILUE.

Summary: This study used the water footprint approach to evaluate the water-use efficiency in spring maize production in Northeast China. The study analyzed the spatial variation and drivers of the water footprint, and found that the grey water footprint had the highest contribution to the total water footprint. The spatial distribution difference of the spring maize unit yield was identified as the fundamental factor explaining the difference in the water footprint. Precipitation, surface water resources, temperature, and irrigated area also had impacts on the water footprint. This study provides a scientific basis for optimizing the distribution of spring maize production and improving water-use efficiency.

Summary: In this paper, the authors analyze the relationship between investment by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and their economic characteristics, as well as the presence of financing constraints during the post-2008 crisis recovery period. Using novel survey data for Irish SMEs, they find a clear link between investment and its marginal product, with elasticities of between 0.55 and 0.65. The study also reveals the presence of financing constraints and the impact of liquid assets, indebtedness, and investment satisfaction on SMEs' investment constraints.

Summary: The ever-intensifying agricultural production redistributes pressures through increasingly intensive trade, with developing regions often overlooked despite visible gaps in water and land productivities. Close trade activities between Central Asian nations and China reveal strikingly low agricultural production efficiency and severe ecological degradation. By enhancing water and land efficiency, without further intervention in resources, Central Asian nations could potentially provide additional food supply for a significant portion of the starving population worldwide.

Summary: The rice-rape rotation system is important in Chinese agricultural production. Studies evaluated the water footprint and energy production efficiency of six rotation systems. The wet directly seeded rice-rape rotation had higher yield, while the dry directly seeded rice-directly seeded rape rotation had lower energy input and water footprint but higher energy production efficiency. Reducing water and nitrogen inputs and tillage intensity during rice season and nitrogen fertilizer rate in rape season can help reduce energy input in the system. The wet directly seeded rice-directly seeded rape rotation is suitable for areas with good irrigation and labor shortages, while the dry directly seeded rice-directly seeded rape rotation is preferred for areas with poor irrigation and labor shortages.

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers. The study finds that social interaction increases the likelihood of farmers adopting SWC, and internet use moderates this effect. The positive impact of social interaction on SWC adoption is more pronounced for farmers in larger villages and those who join cooperative societies.
