Purpose: To examine the effects of Arrabidaa chica (Bignoniacea) extract, a native plant of the Amazon known as crajiru, on a 7,12-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene (DMBA)-induced breast cancer model in Wistar rats. Methods: We compared the response of breast cancer to the oral administration of A. chica extract (ACE) for 16 weeks, associated or not with vincristine. Groups: normal control; DMBA (50mg/kg v.o,) without treatment; DMBA+ACE (300 mg/kg); DMBA+vincristine. 500 mu g/kg injected i.p; DMBA+ACE+Vincristine 250 mu g/kg i.p. Imaging by microPET and fluorescence, biochemistry, oxidative stress, hematology and histopathology were used to validate the treatments. Results: All animals survived. A gradual weight gain in all groups was observed, with no significant difference (p>0.05). The oral administration of ACE and ACE+vincristine 50% significantly reduced breast tumors incidence examined with PET-18FDG and fluorescence (p<0.001). Significant reduction of serum transaminases, oxidative stress and hematological toxicity were observed in these groups. Antioxidant enzyme levels in breast tissue were significantly higher compared to the DMBA and DMBA+vincristine groups. Conclusion: These results demonstrate for the first time that ACE positively influences the treatment of DMBA-induced breast cancer in animal model, inducing a reduction in oxidative stress and chemotherapy toxicity, meaning that ACE may have clinical implication in further studies.

Summary: This study found that in a rat model, ileum and colon resection have different effects on liver regeneration. Colon resection has a positive influence on liver regeneration, while ileum resection negatively impacts the regenerative process.

Summary: This study analyzed the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Cyclin D1, and transcription factor SOX2 in odontogenic cysts. The results showed that the cyst lining in all cases of odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), botryoid odontogenic cysts (BOC), and glandular odontogenic cysts (GOC) were positive for EGFR. The highest expression of nuclear Cyclin D1 was observed in the suprabasal layer of OKCs and in the basal and suprabasal layers of GOC and BOC. SOX2 was only expressed in the suprabasal layer of OKCs.

Summary: This study examined the effects of a negatively charged nanostructured curcumin microemulsion on experimental ulcerative colitis (UC) in rats. The results showed that the nanostructured curcumin microemulsion positively influenced antioxidant enzyme levels and significantly reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, the severity of colonic mucosal ulcers was significantly reduced in the nanostructured curcumin group compared to the other groups. These findings suggest that nanostructured curcumin with negative zeta potential is a promising phytopharmaceutical oral delivery system for UC therapy.
