In this work, we present the synthesis of original thieno[3,4-b] thiophene monomers with rigid substituents (e.g., perfluorinated chains, and aromatic groups) and demonstrate the ability to prepare nanotubular and nanoporous structures via templateless, surfactant-free electropolymerization in organic solvents (dichloromethane). For the majority of synthesized monomers, including a significant amount of water in the electropolymerization solvent leads to the formation of nanoporous membranes with tunable size and surface hydrophobicity. If water is not included in the electropolymerization solvent, most of the surfaces prepared are relatively smooth. Tests with different water contents show that the formation of nanoporous membranes pass through the formation of vertically aligned nanotubes and that the increase in water content induces an increase in the number of nanotubes while their diameter and height remain unchanged. An increase in surface hydrophobicity is observed with the formation of nanopores up to approximate to 300 nm in diameter, but as the nanopores further increase in diameter, the surfaces become more hydrophilic with an observed decrease in the water contact angle. These materials and the ease with which they can be fabricated are extremely interesting for applications in separation membranes, opto-electronic devices, as well as for sensors.

Summary: This study proposes a method of soft templating using self-assembly of conducting monomers in organic solvents to form porous nanotubular structures. Results show that NaphDOT is capable of forming vertically aligned nanotubes, and the size of micelles in the polymerization solution correlates with the inner diameter of the nanotubes formed.

Designing Tunable Omniphobic Surfaces by Controlling the Electropolymerization Sites of Carbazole-Based Monomers

Summary: Carbazole-based monomers are electrodeposited in dichloromethane with different water content and pH, controlling the surface micro- and nanostructures. The presence of water leads to more porous depositions through micellar soft template formation, while water acidity affects the structure and morphology of the monomers. Wetting properties can be tuned through deprotonation or fluorinated postgrafting, resulting in superhydrophobic and oleophobic surfaces.

Effect of Electrolyte Nature on Micellar Soft-Template Electropolymerization in Organic Solvent to Form Nanoporous Polymer Films with a Bioinspired Strategy

Summary: In this study, a bioinspired approach was used to conduct soft-template electropolymerization of NaphDOT in dichloromethane with different water content and supporting electrolytes. The role of electrolytes in the formation of reverse micelles was investigated, and their effects on the resulting porous nanostructures were studied. The findings demonstrate that electrolytes not only play a fundamental role in the formation of reverse micelles and porous nanostructures, but also significantly impact the deposition of oligomers on the soft template.

Summary: In this study, various original benzotrithiophene-based monomers were synthesized and investigated for their ability to form nanoporous structures through soft-template electropolymerization in organic solvents, with a focus on the influence of water. It was found that nanoporous structures were especially observed in solvent saturated with water, and the substituent had a significant influence on the size of the porous structures. The highest hydrophobic properties were achieved with perfluorooctyl chains, leading to the formation of a large number of extremely small nanoporous structures. Furthermore, the surfaces exhibited strong water adhesion comparable to rose petals or gecko feet, suggesting potential applications in water harvesting systems.
