Summary: This research investigates the efficacy of gaseous ozone for the inactivation of Aspergillus niger and Erwinia carotovora on onion bulbs. The results show that the efficacy of ozone on microorganisms increased with an increase in ozone concentration and the number of exposures. SEM analysis revealed structural disintegration of bacterial cells and fungal spores with the severity of ozone application. Mathematical models were used to describe the survival curves of A. niger and E. carotovora.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the polyphenolic profile of onion flowers and evaluate their antioxidant and anti-obesity capacity. The phenolic compounds kaempferol and isorhamnetin glucosides were identified, and the flower extract exhibited the ability to reduce fat accumulation, inhibit digestive enzyme activity, and enhance antioxidant activity. This suggests that onion flowers have potential as functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Summary: This study enhanced the phenol loading and antioxidant activity of wool yarn with onion skin extract by using alum as a mordant. The pre-mordanted sample showed elevated dye uptake on wool and released main phenolic acids that significantly reduced ROS levels in cells. These findings suggest that alum pre-mordanted textiles dyed with onion-skin extracts could be a promising tool against skin diseases.

Summary: This study found that wood vinegar can be applied to onions to enhance their nutritional and health-promoting properties. Wood vinegar had tissue and dose-specific effects on the onion metabolome, improving antioxidant and enzyme-inhibiting capabilities. Moderate to high concentrations of wood vinegar (250-500 mu L L 1) were found to be optimal for enhancing biological activities.

Summary: The presence of onion significantly affects the kinetics of ozone decomposition. The decomposition follows a first-order reaction, and the rate constant varies with the presence of onion. The half-life period increases with concentration and number of exposures, and decreases with temperature and relative humidity. The activation energy ranges between 1.840 and 10.216 kJ mol(-1) for a relative humidity of 85%, and 6.271-12.461 kJ mol(-1) for a relative humidity of 35%.

Summary: Onion is an allogamous species that requires insect pollination for seed production. To ensure efficient pollination, a good pollinator is needed when using male sterile lines. Bee attractants, such as olive pomace, have been used to enhance bee activity. This study evaluated the effectiveness of olive pomace water extract as a pollination enhancer for onion seed yield.

Summary: The germination behavior of onion seeds under different temperature and water potential conditions was studied. The thermal time, hydrotime, and hydrothermal time models were used to describe the influences of temperature and water availability. The results showed that the germination response of onion seeds could be well described by the TT, HT, and HTT models. The Dent-like model was found to be the most accurate in predicting germination rate.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the phytotoxicity and mode of action of bisphenol A (BPA) on Allium cepa roots using a multibiomarker approach. The results showed that even at the lowest concentration tested (1 mg L-1), BPA significantly reduced root length, root fresh weight, and mitotic index. Additionally, it was found that BPA at this concentration also decreased the level of gibberellic acid (GA(3)) in root cells. Higher concentrations of BPA (5 mg L-1) induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative damage to lipids and proteins, and activity of superoxide dismutase. Concentrations of BPA above 25 mg L-1 caused genome damage and synthesis of phytochemicals. These findings highlight the phytotoxic and genotoxic potential of BPA in plants and emphasize the need for environmental monitoring.

Summary: Botrytis allii and B. cinerea are important seed-transmitted pathogens of onion. This study analyzed the chemical compositions of fir, pine, and thyme essential oils and their effects on onion seed health. The oils reduced seed infestation but also led to decreased germination and vigour. Further studies are needed to optimize onion seed treatment conditions.

Summary: As a biostimulant, amino acids enhance plant growth and development, making them a good choice for sustainable farming. This study investigates the effect of priming onion seeds with different amino acids on seedling growth. Glutamine showed the strongest improvement in growth parameters, including germination percentage, root length, and shoot length. The study also found that amino acid priming increased chlorophyll and carotene contents in onion seeds.

Summary: This study investigated the optimal conditions for extracting polyphenols from amaranth seed using a Box-Benhken design. The results showed that the solid-to-liquid ratio, methanol concentration, and ultra-turrax speed had significant effects on the extraction of polyphenols. Additionally, it was found that amaranth seed is a rich source of fatty acids and amino acids.

Summary: This study compared the phytochemical profiles of common garlic and elephant garlic, finding that elephant garlic had lower fiber content but higher sulfur-containing compounds. The distinct phytochemical signature of elephant garlic was maintained during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion, supporting the unique sensory attributes of the bulbs.

Summary: Pethoxamid is a chloroacetamide herbicide commonly used to kill weeds in crops. This study investigated the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of pethoxamid on Allium cepa cells. The results showed that pethoxamid inhibited the root growth of onion and caused chromosomal aberrations and DNA damage. Molecular docking analysis revealed that pethoxamid binds selectively to GC-rich regions in DNA and has a high affinity for VLCFA synthases. Therefore, the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of pethoxamid may be attributed to its multiple binding ability with DNA and VLCFA synthases.
