Classifying caesarean section to understand rising rates among Palestinian refugees: results from 290,047 electronic medical records across five settings

Summary: The rising caesarean-section rates globally are mainly driven by non-medically indicated caesarean-sections. This study focuses on the caesarean-section rates among Palestinian refugees and compares them to WHO guidelines and rates in the host settings. The findings show that the caesarean-section rates among Palestinian refugees exceed the recommended guidelines and vary across different settings. The analysis highlights the need for targeted strategies to reduce caesarean-section rates.

Summary: Despite staff confidence in using the EHR system, there are challenges such as lack of appropriate support, risks of data corruption, and communication issues with outside healthcare providers. Further development is needed to address limitations in staff training, support for health centers, and communication between facilities to prevent delays in treatment and fragmentation of health records.

Synthesizing Electronic Health Records for Predictive Models in Low-Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)

Summary: The use of machine learning models and electronic health records has made it possible to develop clinical decision support systems. However, limitations in data, such as small size and irregular sampling, hinder progress in low-middle-income countries. Deep generative models have been proposed to generate realistic synthetic data, including EHRs, without compromising patient privacy. In this study, we used a deep generative model to generate synthetic data based on a small dataset from a LMIC setting, and found that the diagnostic model trained on the synthetic data outperformed models trained on original and oversampled data.

Secure decentralized electronic health records sharing system based on blockchains

Summary: Blockchain technology has the potential to improve the efficiency, security, and privacy of Electronic Health Records (EHR) sharing systems. This paper proposes a permissioned Blockchain based healthcare data sharing system that addresses security and performance challenges by integrating Blockchain technology, decentralized file system, and threshold signature. The experimental results show that the proposed system outperforms existing Blockchain based systems in terms of performance and security.
