The pharmacological and biological activities of steam-activated ginseng are greater than those of non-steamed ginseng. And also, the chemical profiling varies with different processing. To track the chemical constituents of white ginseng (WG), red ginseng (RG), and black ginseng (BG), ginsenosides and amino acids were comparatively analyzed in WG, RG, and BG. Twenty-three ginsenosides and twenty-nine amino acids were fast identified based on multiple ultra-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) methods. The results showed that during the steaming process of ginseng, ginsenosides transform into constituents of low polarity by hydrolysis, isomerization, and dehydration at C-20, and hydrolysis also occurs at C-3 or C-6. Relatively less attention has been paid to amino acids in WG, RG, and BG. The amino acids profiling of WG, RG, and BG showed the contents of amino acids were decreased during the steaming process. This simple and fast method provides possibility to monitor multiple components for the quality control and global evaluation of ginseng products during processing.

Hua Sui, Lianlian Zhu, Libin Zhan, Tingting Bi, Boyu Zhang

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction and insulin resistance in rats with chronic psychological stress-induced diabetic cognitive impairment. The findings showed that chronic psychological stress led to mitochondrial damage and insulin resistance in the brain. However, the traditional Chinese medicine compound Zibu Piyin Recipe (ZBPYR) significantly improved these conditions. This research provides new insights for the development of ZBPYR as a treatment for chronic psychological stress and DACD.

Lianlian Zhu, Liang Xu, Ye Huang, Caixiang Xie, Deqiang Dou, Jiang Xu

Summary: The study revealed that warmer, humid, and shady environments favor the accumulation of ginsenosides in mountainous forest cultivated ginseng, while conditions such as lower temperature, more precipitation, weaker light, and higher altitude are beneficial for amino acid accumulation. Mineral elements contribute to the accumulation of amino acids, but soil acidification is unfavorable.

Erchen Decoction alleviates obesity-related hepatic steatosis via modulating gut microbiota-drived butyric acid contents and promoting fatty acid beta-oxidation

Ling Zhang, Ning Chen, Libin Zhan, Tingting Bi, Wen Zhou, Lijing Zhang, Lianlian Zhu

Summary: This study investigates the therapeutic effect and molecular mechanism of Erchen decoction (ECD) in a rat model of high-fat diet-induced obesity. The results demonstrate that ECD treatment improves lipid metabolic disorders and hepatic steatosis. Furthermore, ECD promotes the abundance of beneficial bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids and reduces the abundance of disease-related bacteria. ECD also increases total short-chain fatty acids levels, particularly butyric acid. The mechanism may involve an increase in acetyl-histone 3-lysine 9 levels, promoting fatty acid beta-oxidation in the liver.

Structural changes of poplar lignin during the ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment and synergetic alkali-DES treatment

Jingmo Zhou, Shubin Wu, Ying Liu

Summary: Expenditure isolation of lignin and the understanding of its structural variations during different isolation processes are crucial for the high-value utilization of lignin. This study proposed a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and 4-chlorobenzene sulfonic acid for rapid lignin separation from poplar. The structural variations of DES lignin and its relationship with alkali pre-extraction of hemicellulose were investigated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment enhanced the DES separation of lignin and promoted the cleavage of specific linkages, resulting in reduced molecular weight and thermal stability of isolated DES lignin. Moreover, DES lignin obtained from integrated utilization displayed higher purity and S/G ratio compared to lignin obtained from direct DES treatment.
