Summary: To understand the effect of DNA- or RNA-specific low-molecular compounds on cellular processes at the molecular level, spectroscopic methods were used in this study. The interaction between the DNA-specific thiazine dye methylene blue (MB) and synthetic polynucleotides poly(rA) and poly(rU) was investigated. The results showed different binding modes of MB to single-stranded and double-stranded structures of the polynucleotides. This study contributes to the understanding of the structural-functional properties of nucleic acids in cells.

Summary: Recent developments in fluorescence spectroscopy allow for the measurement of absorption and dispersed fluorescence spectra of isolated molecular ions at low temperatures. Lower temperatures provide narrower spectra and better information on vibronic features. Experiments were conducted on oxazine dyes cooled to around 100 K, and the results showed small Stokes shifts and broader spectra for the darrow-red cations compared to other ionic dyes.

Summary: The study on the interaction of thiazine dye methylene blue (MB) with DNA and albumin revealed that MB stabilizes the native structure of these biomolecules, increasing the melting temperature of the complexes. MB binds to DNA by intercalation and electrostatic mechanisms, while the main binding mode with albumin is electrostatic, leading to protein stabilization.

Summary: The effect of weathering exposure on the optical absorption characteristics of LDPE grad-LA071 has been investigated. It has been found that the optical absorption of LDPE grad-LA071 decreases exponentially with wavelength in different durations of time. In addition, the optical absorption increases significantly with exposure time, especially at high frequencies, suggesting that LDPE grad-LA071 is a practical candidate for a selective filter for UV light. Therefore, it can be used as a UV light mask in semiconductor devices and as a protective shield for solar cells. Furthermore, the LDPE grad-LA071 film can be used in packaging to extend the lifespan of various items.

Summary: The recycling of waste mandarin peels into biochar (MRBC) has been used as a high performance and cost-effective adsorbent for treating polluted wastewater effluents. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to analyze the adsorption competency of MRBC on two dyes, methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF), either in individual solutions or binary combinations. The results showed that MRBC was capable of effectively removing a high percentage of both dyes. However, the adsorption capacity decreased when the dyes were combined. The cost estimation of MRBC production and wastewater treatment indicated that both were relatively low.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is commonly used for studying glassy materials in cultural heritage, but it is more difficult to interpret the spectra and apply the technique with portable instruments. In contrast, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) can be used in archaeometric investigations as it is portable and non-invasive. However, there is limited application of this technique to historical glasses. This exploratory work demonstrates the potential of DRIFTS, in combination with portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) and EDS microanalyses, for studying the composition and alteration of glass samples in cultural heritage.
