Summary: Paraoxonase enzymes are an important redox system that protect cells against oxidative stress. The PON enzymes family, consisting of PON-1, PON-2, and PON-3, play a role in preventing cardiovascular disease and are associated with neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. This review summarizes the evidence on the role of PONs in these diseases and their ability to modify risk factors for neurological disorders, focusing on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative and neurological diseases.

Summary: Polyphenols, such as resveratrol, have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and are widely used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases by targeting mitochondria. These diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, are primarily caused by mitochondrial dysfunction and have significant public health implications.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases are accelerated by oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to impairment of mitochondrial function, cellular damage, and dysfunction of DNA repair systems. Increased consumption of antioxidants can delay the development of these disorders and improve the quality of life for diagnosed patients. Dietary supplementation with neuroprotective plant-derived polyphenols may play a crucial role in healthy aging.

Summary: This study evaluates the relationship between dementia incidence in Europe and exposure to air pollution under current and future climate scenarios, projecting a significant increase in dementia rates due to climate change and aging population. However, the impact of climate change on dementia appears limited, as the increase in southern Europe is offset by a decrease in northern countries due to projected improvements in air quality from enhanced rainfall.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the association between periodontitis and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and assessed the impact of confounding factors on this association. The study found a positive relationship between periodontitis and AD, but highlighted the importance of considering confounding factors.

Summary: Exosomes, small extracellular vesicles of 30-150 nm in diameter, have recently been found to play a role in the initiation and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. They carry specific proteins, lipids, functional mRNAs, and various non-coding RNAs, making them potential diagnostic biomarkers for early disease detection. Their composition and function vary depending on their originating and recipient cells, and they have been highlighted as a novel field for early diagnosis in neurodegenerative diseases.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders characterized by the progressive deterioration of nervous system functionality. The precise etiological factors remain unclear, but aging, genetic predisposition, and environmental stressors may contribute. Viral infections, especially neurotropic viruses, are believed to play a role in the onset and progression of these diseases. The autophagy pathway mediated by viral infection can cause pathological aggregation of cellular proteins associated with various neurodegenerative diseases. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these diseases is critical for developing targeted therapeutic approaches.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases cause progressive loss of neuronal structures and myelin sheaths, leading to significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in the elderly. MicroRNAs have been found to play important roles in the development of the central nervous system and have been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews on the roles of microRNAs in these diseases. This review summarizes recent developments in understanding the roles of microRNAs in neurodegenerative diseases and discusses the potential application of microRNA-based methods for early diagnosis.

Summary: This review article discusses the beneficial effects of Lactobacillus against various diseases, with a special emphasis on its effects on neurological disorders such as depression, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease. Probiotics are live microbes found in fermented foods and beverages, which, when administered in adequate doses, provide health benefits to the host. Imbalance in gut microbiota can lead to the development of several diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, skin, immune system, inflammation, and gut-brain axis. Recent research has shown promising effects of probiotics in alleviating symptoms in different disease models, highlighting their potential for prevention and treatment. The review also covers current probiotics-based products, disease models, measured markers, and evidence from past studies.

Summary: Bexarotene is a RXR agonist approved for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma treatment. It also shows promising potential in neurological diseases such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, and especially Alzheimer's disease (AD). Its mechanisms of action include inhibiting Ass production and aggregation, activating LXR/RXR heterodimers, regulating neuroinflammation, and ultimately improving cognitive function.
