Nearly all motile cilia have a 9+2 axoneme containing a central apparatus (CA), consisting of two central microtubules with projections, that is essential for motility. To date, only 22 proteins are known to be CA components. To identify new candidate CA proteins, we used mass spectrometry to compare axonemes of wild-type Chlamydomonas and a CA-less mutant. We identified 44 novel candidate CA proteins, of which 13 are conserved in humans. Five of the latter were studied more closely, and all five localized to the CA; therefore, most of the other candidates are likely to also be CA components. Our results reveal that the CA is far more compositionally complex than previously recognized and provide a greatly expanded knowledge base for studies to understand the architecture of the CA and how it functions. The discovery of the new conserved CA proteins will facilitate genetic screening to identify patients with a form of primary ciliary dyskinesia that has been difficult to diagnose.

Structural organization of the C1b projection within the ciliary central apparatus

Kai Cai, Yanhe Zhao, Lei Zhao, Nhan Phan, Yuqing Hou, Xi Cheng, George B. Witman, Daniela Nicastro

Summary: The study identified two proteins, FAP42 and FAP246, localized to the L-shaped C1b projection of the central apparatus (CA) and their interaction with the candidate CA protein FAP413. The complex of FAP246-FAP413-FAP42 is essential for stable assembly of the C1b, C1f, and C2b projections, and their loss leads to ciliary motility defects.

A Small Active Magnetic Antenna of Loran-C

Kaixuan Wang, Sheng Tang, Jing Ke, Yuqing Hou

Summary: This article presents the design of a broadband compact small active magnetic antenna for receiving Loran-C signals both indoors and outdoors. The antenna consists of a magnetic antenna part and an active circuit part. The magnetic antenna part utilizes a new H-shaped magnetic antenna with a high quality factor, achieved through material selection and antenna shape simulation. The active circuit part includes an amplifier and a filter designed using an operational amplifier, as well as a single-tube double tuning circuit for frequency selection to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Through these designs, effective reception of Loran-C signals is achieved in both indoor and outdoor environments. The processed and tested Loran-C active magnetic antenna successfully receives a clear pulse group signal at a frequency of 99.21 kHz. The antenna length is 2.75 cm, and the circuit board size is 10 x 3 cm. The SNR is measured to be 12.04 dB outdoors and 16.48 dB indoors.

Genetic variants of IFIH1 and DHX58 affect the chronicity of hepatitis C in the Chinese Han population

Peng Huang, Jing-Jing Wu, Jin-Wei Zhang, Yu-Qing Hou, Ping Zhu, Rong Yin, Rong-Bin Yu, Yun Zhang, Ming Yue, Wei Hou

Summary: This study investigates the connection between retinoic acid-inducible gene I-like receptor gene polymorphism and hepatitis C chronicity in the Chinese Han population. It found that DHX58 rs2074158-G allele and IFIH1 rs10930046-C allele are associated with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). The risk of CHC increases with the number of unfavorable genotypes carried by the infected person. IFIH1 rs10930046, DHX58 rs2074158, age, ALT, and AST levels are independent predictors of CHC.

Insights to Gossypium defense response against Verticillium dahliae: the Cotton Cancer

Muhammad Jawad Umer, Jie Zheng, Mengying Yang, Raufa Batool, Aamir Ali Abro, Yuqing Hou, Yanchao Xu, Haileslassie Gebremeskel, Yuhong Wang, ZhongLi Zhou, Xiaoyan Cai, Fang Liu, Baohong Zhang

Summary: The soil-borne pathogen Verticillium dahliae, also known as The Cotton Cancer, causes Verticillium wilt in cotton crops, a destructive disease with a global impact. The pathogen employs virulence mechanisms such as releasing enzymes that degrade cell walls, activating virulence-related genes, and using protein effectors to infect cotton plants. On the other hand, cotton plants have developed defense mechanisms to combat the impact of V. dahliae.

An adaptive parameter selection strategy based on maximizing the probability of data for robust fluorescence molecular tomography reconstruction

Jintao Li, Lizhi Zhang, Jia Liu, Diya Zhang, Dizhen Kang, Beilei Wang, Xiaowei He, Heng Zhang, Yizhe Zhao, Hongbo Guo, Yuqing Hou

Summary: This paper proposes a universally applicable adaptive parameter selection method based on maximizing the probability of data (MPD) strategy in fluorescent molecular tomography (FMT) regularization methods. The strategy establishes a regularization parameter model using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation and maximum likelihood (ML) estimation and determines the stable optimal parameters through multiple iterative estimates. Numerical simulations and in vivo experiments demonstrate that the MPD strategy can provide stable regularization parameters for both L-2 or L-1 norm-based regularization algorithms and achieve good reconstruction performance.

Genome-Wide Characterization of the SAMS Gene Family in Cotton Unveils the Putative Role of GhSAMS2 in Enhancing Abiotic Stress Tolerance

Joseph Wanjala Kilwake, Muhammad Jawad Umer, Yangyang Wei, Teame Gereziher Mehari, Richard Odongo Magwanga, Yanchao Xu, Yuqing Hou, Yuhong Wang, Margaret Linyerera Shiraku, Joy Nyangasi Kirungu, Xiaoyan Cai, Zhongli Zhou, Renhai Peng, Fang Liu

Summary: Drought and salinity are the most devastating abiotic factors worldwide, causing severe problems in agriculture. Plants have developed complex molecular mechanisms, including S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthetase (SAMS) genes, to adapt to these harsh conditions. In this study, we identified and characterized 16 SAMS genes in upland cotton and found that GhSAMS2 was highly induced under drought and salt stress. Knockdown of GhSAMS2 expression through virus-induced gene silencing (VGIS) led to increased susceptibility of transgenic plants to drought and salt stress. Our findings provide insights into the structure, classification, and role of SAMS genes in abiotic stress response in upland cotton.
