The infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) sampling coupled with chemometric methods has been applied to non-destructive detection of adulterants in dietary supplements containing Ginkgo biloba extract. The sample set comprised the spectra of six drugs and sixteen dietary supplements with ginkgo leaf extract. Spectral data (900-1800 cm(-1)) were analyzed using multivariate partial least squares regression combined with a discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The second derivative of spectra followed by mean centering was used as preprocessing method. Three models were constructed and validated for detection of potential adulterants: kaempferol, quercetin, and rutin. The iPLS-DA classification models achieved about 87.5%, 93,7%, and 87,5% of correct classification for adulteration with kaempferol, quercetin and rutin, respectively. The results obtained from classification models were verified by chromatographic fingerprints of unhydrolyzed sample extracts. Two-trace two-dimensional asynchronous correlation maps were constructed from pairs of spectra (each dietary supplement spectrum vs. averaged spectrum of drugs) and then analyzed by multiway PCA which revealed good discrimination between samples. Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a growing metabolic disease, and there is a need to find natural products for preventative and early-stage treatment. White mulberry leaves, known for their beneficial properties, can regulate postprandial glucose concentration. However, the quality of dietary supplements containing white mulberry is found to be low, lacking the expected health benefits. A proposed alternative method for assessing the quality of these products involves determining DNJ content using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy combined with PLS regression.

Summary: In recent years, the study of solid-state fluorescent compounds has gained interest, especially those that are easy to prepare and inexpensive. This study investigates the photophysical properties of methoxy-trans-stilbene analogs using X-ray analysis and explores the relationship between the molecular packing in the crystal lattice and the solid-state fluorescence properties. The developed QSPR model shows that the fluorescence quantum yield of these compounds is mainly influenced by weak intermolecular interactions and the electrophilicity of the molecule.

Techno-economic assessment of waste mandarin biochar as a green adsorbent for binary dye wastewater effluents of methylene blue and basic fuchsin: Lab- and large-scale investigations

Ahmed S. El-Shafie, Evana Rahman, Yasser Gadelhak, Rehab Mahmoud, Marwa El-Azary

Summary: The recycling of waste mandarin peels into biochar (MRBC) has been used as a high performance and cost-effective adsorbent for treating polluted wastewater effluents. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to analyze the adsorption competency of MRBC on two dyes, methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF), either in individual solutions or binary combinations. The results showed that MRBC was capable of effectively removing a high percentage of both dyes. However, the adsorption capacity decreased when the dyes were combined. The cost estimation of MRBC production and wastewater treatment indicated that both were relatively low.

Lead-free double perovskite Cs2NaInCl6 nanocrystals doped with Sb3+and Tb3+for copper ions detection in lubricating oil

Summary: This study synthesized Cs2NaInCl6 nanocrystals co-doped with Sb3+ and Tb3+ ions as probes for copper ions detection in lubricating oil. The introduction of Sb3+ effectively reduced the band gap of the host material and enabled energy transfer pathway for Tb3+ emission. The doped Tb3+ ions resulted in the suppression of emission due to electron transfer. The Cs2NaInCl6: 2.5 %Sb3+, 40 %Tb3+ NCs exhibited superior sensitivity and selectivity for copper ions detection.

Non-invasive analysis of reference glass and historical mosaic tesserae by means of reflectance infrared spectroscopy

Maria Cristina Caggiani, Germana Barone, Paolo Mazzoleni

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is commonly used for studying glassy materials in cultural heritage, but it is more difficult to interpret the spectra and apply the technique with portable instruments. In contrast, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) can be used in archaeometric investigations as it is portable and non-invasive. However, there is limited application of this technique to historical glasses. This exploratory work demonstrates the potential of DRIFTS, in combination with portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) and EDS microanalyses, for studying the composition and alteration of glass samples in cultural heritage.
