Circadian clocks govern daily physiological and molecular rhythms, and putative rhythms in the expression of metabolizing xenobiotics have been described in insects. Such rhythms could have important consequences for outcomes of chemical exposures at different times of the day. The proportion of photophase (light) and scotophase (dark) also influence the enzyme activities. Several studies have been done on the mechanism of insecticide resistance in Spodoptera litura exposed to chemical insecticides. This study is aimed at understanding the circadian variations of cypermethrin detoxification mechanisms in S. litura. The toxicity of insecticide, cypermethrin exposed to three different photoperiods in 3rd instar larvae of S. litura has been investigated. Detoxification enzyme profiles of - and -esterases, glutathione S-transferase (GST), and cytochrome P450 (Cyt P450) were assessed. The results showed that larvae were more tolerant to cypermethrin treated larvae at 8h L: 16h D photoperiod as compared with two other photoperiods tested. We observed significant increases in - and -esterases and cyt P450 activities in 4 and 8h at different photoperiods. GST activity was significantly changed at different photoperiods at different timings. Activities of specific detoxification enzymes fluctuated during the time, and for specific insecticides, the concentration resulting in 50% mortality varied significantly during the different photoperiods. The time of the day when chemical exposure is imposed should be an important consideration in the experimental design, and use of pesticides.

Long-term storage does not affect the infectivity of entomopathogenic nematodes on insect hosts

Kandhasamy Lalitha, Kannan Nithya, Balasubbiramaniyan Guru Bharathi, Srinivasan Venkatesan, Muthugounder Subramanian Shivakumar

Summary: Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are effective biopesticides used in insect control, but their low popularity is due to the reduced infectivity caused by periodic release of stored EPNs. This study focuses on storing EPNs for a longer period of time using encapsulating beads. The results show that Arabic gum-sodium alginate combination is a promising approach and semi-field trials proved the efficacy of storing encapsulated EPNs in mosquito larval control.

Antifeedant and larvicidal activity of bioactive compounds isolated from entomopathogenic fungi Penicillium sp. for the control of agricultural and medically important insect pest (Spodoptera litura and Culex quinquefasciatus)

Murugan Arunthirumeni, Gunasekar Vinitha, Muthugounder Subramanian Shivakumar

Summary: In this study, bioactive compounds from Penicillium sp. were isolated and tested for insecticidal activity on Spodoptera litura and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae. Functional groups such as chloroalkanes, sulfonates, phosphines, amines, carboxylic acid, alkanes, and isocyanates were identified by FTIR. Ethyl acetate extract of Penicillium sp. showed significant larvicidal activity and high antifeedant activity against the larvae.

Effect of Different Methods of Drying on Appearance and Quality of Black Pepper

H. J. Akshitha, M. S. Shivakumar, R. Sivaranjani, S. J. Ankegowda, P. Mohammed Faisal, Honnappa Asangi, M. Balaji Rajkumar

Summary: Black pepper, known as black gold, has been traded like gold in the past. The market value of black pepper is determined by its color, lustre, and density. Sun-drying is a common drying method, but it affects the shiny black color. Blanching is one technique to retain the color but requires extra time and resources. An experiment was conducted to find an alternative method to retain the black color without affecting quality, and covering the berries with a 100-gauge polythene sheet for 3 or 5 hours and subsequent drying under direct sunlight proved to be effective.
