Obesity is recognized as a worldwide health crisis. Obesity and its associated health complications such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases impose a big social and economic burden. In an effort to identify safe, efficient, and long-term effective methods to treat obesity, various natural products with potential for inhibiting adipogenesis were revealed. This review aimed to discuss the molecular mechanisms underlying adipogenesis and the inhibitory effects of various phytochemicals, including those from natural sources, on the early stage of adipogenesis. We discuss key steps (proliferation and cell cycle) and their regulators (cell-cycle regulator, transcription factors, and intracellular signaling pathways) at the early stage of adipocyte differentiation as the mechanisms responsible for obesity.

Natural Extracts That Stimulate Adipocyte Browning and Their Underlying Mechanisms

Min-Kyeong Lee, Bonggi Lee, Choon Young Kim

Summary: Progress has been made in understanding the developmental lineage and transcriptional factors regulating brown and beige adipocytes, but the role of environmental modifiers such as food components and natural extracts remains unclear. Synthetic drugs targeting adipose tissue browning and thermogenesis produce undesirable pleiotropic effects, highlighting the need for research into alternative natural sources to combat obesity and related metabolic disorders.

A Comprehensive Review of Pathological Mechanisms and Natural Dietary Ingredients for the Management and Prevention of Sarcopenia

Juhae Kim, Joo-Yeon Lee, Choon Young Kim

Summary: Sarcopenia is a recognized clinical disease characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function associated with aging. Dietary modification, including botanical and marine extracts, phytochemicals, and probiotics, has been shown to be a feasible approach to combat sarcopenia. This review provides an overview of the definition, diagnosis, prevalence, and adverse effects of sarcopenia, explores possible pathological mechanisms, and highlights recent studies on potential biological functions against sarcopenia. The review highlights the importance of further research on dietary materials for healthier aging, particularly in terms of muscle health.

Protective Role of Ethanol Extract of Cibotium barometz (Cibotium Rhizome) against Dexamethasone-Induced Muscle Atrophy in C2C12 Myotubes

Na-Hyung Kim, Joo-Yeon Lee, Choon Young Kim

Summary: This study investigated the potential improvement effect of the ethanol extract of Cibotium Rhizome (ECR) on dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy in an in vitro cell model. The study identified the phytochemicals in ECR and found that ECR increased the expression of myosin heavy chain, p-Akt, p-mTOR, p-p70S6K, and repressed the expression of REDD1, KLF15, muscle atrophy F-box, and muscle-specific RING finger protein-1. These findings suggest that further studies are needed to develop therapeutic agents using ECR to alleviate skeletal muscle atrophy or sarcopenia.

Application of Milk Exosomes for Musculoskeletal Health: Talking Points in Recent Outcomes

Na-Hyung Kim, Juhae Kim, Joo-Yeon Lee, Hyeon-A Bae, Choon Young Kim

Summary: Milk is a nutrient-rich food source, and exosomes derived from milk have shown potential in treating various diseases. However, there is limited research on milk exosomes in relation to geriatric health. This study aims to explore the therapeutic potential of milk exosomes in musculoskeletal diseases, focusing on their cargoes, isolation methods, and recent research in the field. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of milk exosomes are also discussed.

Association of Micronutrients and Handgrip Strength in Korean Older Population: A Cross-Sectional Study

Na-Hyung Kim, Choon Young Kim

Summary: This study investigated the association between micronutrient intake and handgrip strength in the Korean older population. The study found that insufficient potassium intake was significantly associated with low handgrip strength, indicating the need for continuous monitoring to intervene or prevent dynapenia or sarcopenia.
