A sensitive and selective quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) extraction combined with dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) cleanup method was developed to simultaneously extract a wide range of personal care products (16 biocides, 4 synthetic musks, and 4 benzotriazoles) in fish muscle and liver tissues. In order to get satisfactory recoveries, different extraction parameters were optimized, including extraction salts and d-SPE materials, extraction solvents and acetic acid contents in organic phase, and the ratios of solvent and water. Ultra pressure liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used to analyze the target compounds in the extracts. Among the 24 personal care products, the recoveries in the range of 70-120 % were obtained for 20, 19, and 12 analytes in fish muscle at the spiking concentrations of 10, 5, and 1 ng/g ww, respectively, and for 13, 12, and 11 analytes in liver at the spiking concentrations of 40, 20, and 4 ng/g ww, respectively. Method quantification limits (MQLs) of all analytes were 0.02-2.12 ng/g ww for fish muscle and 0.22-12.2 ng/g ww for fish liver tissues. The method was successfully applied to wild fish samples collected from Dongjiang River, south China. Twenty-one and 17 of the analytes were found in fish muscle and liver samples, respectively, in at least one site of the river with the concentrations between below MQLs and 119 ng/g ww, respectively.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Degradation of Reactive Radical-Mediated Probe Compounds by the UV/Chlorine Process: Theoretical Calculation and Experimental Verification

Tao Peng, Chao Xu, Lei Yang, Bin Yang, Wen-Wen Cai, Fenglong Gu, Guang-Guo Ying

Summary: The UV/chlorine process is an efficient advanced oxidation process in water treatment. This study evaluated the reaction kinetics and mechanism of nitrobenzene, benzoic acid, and p-chlorobenzoic acid in the UV/chlorine process using theoretical calculations and experimental studies. The results showed that the reactions in the UV/chlorine process are mainly initiated by H-abstraction and addition pathways, with slower reactions initiated by chlorine radicals. The theoretically calculated rate constants were consistent with experimental results.

Jia-Hui Zhao, Li-Xin Hu, Yu-Qing Wang, Yu Han, You-Sheng Liu, Jian-Liang Zhao, Guang-Guo Ying

Summary: The widespread use of various chemicals has led to water pollution, which is a global environmental concern. This study investigated the presence and characteristics of organic chemicals in the North River, South China. It identified 402 different organic chemicals in the river, including industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Some of these chemicals have rarely been reported in surface water before, and some have never been documented in the North River. The study also found significant seasonal variations in the distribution of these chemicals, which could be attributed to wastewater discharge, river dilution, and anthropogenic activities such as pesticide use in agriculture.

Potential Emissions of Insecticide VOCs and Their Correlations between Agricultural Emissions and Meteorological Factors

Jingjin Yang, Genyi Wu, Caihong Jiang, Wenqi Long, Wangrong Liu

Summary: In recent years, there has been growing concern about volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their potential environmental impact. However, little research has been done on the VOCs pollution caused by insecticide application in agriculture. This study aimed to assess the occurrence of insecticide VOCs in China and discuss the estimation of VOCs emission potentials and actual emissions. Nine insecticide formulations were tested using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a pump-suction photoionization detection gas detector. The results showed significant variation in VOCs emission potentials and actual emissions among different formulations, with temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure affecting the actual emission ratio.

In Situ Insight into the Availability and Desorption Kinetics of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Soils with Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films

Yue-Rui Huang, Si-Si Liu, Jin-Xin Zi, Sheng-Ming Cheng, Jun Li, Guang-Guo Ying, Chang-Er Chen

Summary: This study used an in situ tool, diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), to investigate the distribution and exchange kinetics of five typical PFAS in four soils. The results showed a nonlinear relationship between PFAS masses in DGT and time, indicating that PFAS were partially supplied by the solid phase in all soils. A dynamic model called DGT-induced fluxes in soils/sediments (DIFS) was used to interpret the results and determine the distribution coefficients for the labile fraction (Kdl), response time (tc), and adsorption/desorption rates (k1 and k-1). The findings suggest that the availability of PFAS in soils is controlled by Kdl, while the release of PFAS from soils may be kinetically constrained, especially for more hydrophilic PFAS.

Removal and Inactivation of Virus by Ceramic Water Filters Coated with Lanthanum (III)

Haiyan Yang, Xiaopeng Min, Jiale Wu, Xunyang Lin, Fang-Zhou Gao, Li-Xin Hu, Liguo Zhang, Yin Wang, Shangping Xu, Guang-Guo Ying

Summary: Ceramic water filters (CWFs) with lanthanum (La) coating showed enhanced viral removal, exceeding the capacity of commercial CWFs. The increased attachment of virus onto the filter surface, reduction of repulsive energy barrier, and the inactivation nature of La-coated ceramic contributed to the improved viral removal. Both genome damage and protein capsid conformational changes caused viral inactivation by La-coated ceramic. This finding is promising for practical viral removal in developing countries and advances the research on La application for water treatment.
