This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the medicinal, folkloric and traditional culinary uses of Ferula species, related products and extracts in different countries together with the description of recently isolated new components and the related bioactivities. The phytochemical composition of the essential oils (EOs), oleo-gum-resin (OGR) and the non-volatile fractions obtained from several endemic and indigenous Ferula species is also reported. A special emphasis is placed on their unusual components, Le. sulfur-containing volatiles from the EOs and the new phytochemicals with mixed biogenetic origins. More than 180 chemical constituents (excluding common essential oils components), including sulfur-containing metabolites, terpenoids, coumarins, sesquiterpene coumarins, etc., as both aglycones and glycosides, are reported, along with their occurrence and biological activities when available. A large number of new secondary metabolites, belonging to different classes of natural products possessing interesting biological activities, from the antiproliferative to the anti-inflammatory to the neuroprotective ones, among the others, have been recently found in the Ferula genus. Several of these phytochemicals are exclusive to this genus; therefore may be considered chemotaxonomic markers. All these aspects are extensively discussed in this review.

Characterization of essential oils and volatiles from the aerial parts of Mentha pulegium L. (Lamiaceae) using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) and headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in combination with GC-MS

Majid Mohammadhosseini, Alessandro Venditti, Behnam Mahdavi

Summary: This study reports the chemical profiles of the essential oils and volatiles obtained from the aerial parts of Mentha pulegium L. using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation and headspace solid phase microextraction approaches combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry quantification. The results show that the essential oils mainly consist of oxygenated monoterpenes, while the volatiles are dominated by non-terpene hydrocarbons. Furthermore, it is suggested that combining these two methods can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the chemical composition of a specific plant sample.

Claudio Frezza, Daniela De Vita, Chiara Toniolo, Fabio Sciubba, Lamberto Tomassini, Alessandro Venditti, Armandodoriano Bianco, Mauro Serafini, Sebastiano Foddai

Summary: This review paper reports on the occurrence, chemophenetic value, and biological activities of two specific phenyl-ethanoid glycosides, leucosceptoside A and leucosceptoside B, in the plant kingdom. It is the first study conducted on this subject. The analysis of literature data leads to three important conclusions: leucosceptoside A is more commonly found in plants than leucosceptoside B, leucosceptoside A exhibits more biological activities than leucosceptoside B although their potency cannot be determined, and neither of these compounds can be used as a chemophenetic marker. These aspects are discussed in more depth in this work.

Structural changes of poplar lignin during the ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment and synergetic alkali-DES treatment

Jingmo Zhou, Shubin Wu, Ying Liu

Summary: Expenditure isolation of lignin and the understanding of its structural variations during different isolation processes are crucial for the high-value utilization of lignin. This study proposed a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and 4-chlorobenzene sulfonic acid for rapid lignin separation from poplar. The structural variations of DES lignin and its relationship with alkali pre-extraction of hemicellulose were investigated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment enhanced the DES separation of lignin and promoted the cleavage of specific linkages, resulting in reduced molecular weight and thermal stability of isolated DES lignin. Moreover, DES lignin obtained from integrated utilization displayed higher purity and S/G ratio compared to lignin obtained from direct DES treatment.
