Summary: Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) markers are reliable predictors for predicting parenchymal hematoma expansion in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). This study investigates whether NCCT features can also identify patients at risk of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) growth.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between different locations (deep versus lobar) of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and early neurological deterioration, hematoma expansion (HE), and outcome. The results showed that lobar ICH location was associated with more common HE and early neurological deterioration, while deep ICH location was associated with smaller hematoma size. However, after adjusting for prognostic variables, deep ICH was associated with worse outcome.

Summary: This review article provides an overview of the epidemiology, cause, mechanisms of injury, current treatment strategies, and future research directions of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The incidence of hemorrhagic stroke has increased globally in the past 40 years, with changes in the cause over time due to improved hypertension management and increased use of anticoagulants. Preclinical and clinical trials have shed light on the underlying cause and mechanisms of injury from ICH, including the complex interaction between edema, inflammation, iron-induced injury, and oxidative stress. Although several trials have investigated the optimal medical and surgical management of ICH, there has been no clear improvement in survival and functional outcomes. Ongoing research into novel approaches for ICH management offers hope for reducing the devastating impact of this disease in the future.

Summary: Among patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, approximately 1 in 4 cases have undetermined etiology, leading to a relatively high short-term mortality rate. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy accounts for the largest hemorrhage volume, while hypertensive arteriopathy and undetermined ICH have smaller volumes.

Summary: This study found that both OAC-related ICH and antiplatelet-related ICH had worse 90-day mortality outcomes compared to nonantithrombotic ICH. Antiplatelet-related ICH is common and associated with poor clinical outcomes, warranting further research to determine appropriate clinical management.

Summary: Factors such as deep cerebral hemorrhage, midline shift, and age > 58 years were independently correlated with poor outcomes in patients after surgery for spontaneous supratentorial cerebral hemorrhage. In the control group, age > 58 years and GCS <= 8 were independently correlated with poor outcomes. These findings could help in selecting clinical treatment plans and evaluating postoperative prognosis for patients.

Summary: Research in the acute management of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) over the past 35 years has shown that early treatment to control bleeding and minimize brain injury is crucial. However, current medical and surgical interventions have not yet shown significant benefits in large-scale trials, emphasizing the need for further research and improvement in the delivery of ICH therapies for better outcomes.

Summary: This study found that serum NOX4 concentrations were closely related to the severity, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and 90-day prognosis of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) patients. Serum NOX4 concentrations were significantly correlated with WFNS scores and modified Fisher scores, serving as independent predictors for DCI and poor outcomes. Moreover, serum NOX4 concentrations showed high predictive capability for DCI and poor outcomes following hemorrhagic stroke.

Summary: The study aimed to validate the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM) in European Portuguese language. The Portuguese version (MPIIQM-Pt) of the questionnaire was developed through forward and back translation, pilot testing, and cultural adaptation. The results showed high internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and good construct validity of MPIIQM-Pt. This validated questionnaire will contribute to better pain assessment and research among Portuguese musicians. Rating: 8/10

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of systemic midazolam on pain after open inguinal hernia repair and its relationship with preoperative anxiety. The results showed that increasing doses of midazolam were associated with a decrease in pain during the first week after surgery, but had no apparent effect on chronic postsurgical pain. However, the impact of midazolam on pain varied depending on the level of preoperative anxiety.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize radiation protection measures used in interventional radiology departments in Portugal. It was found that most equipment for fluoroscopy-guided intervention procedures in Portugal are single-sourced with a flat panel detector, and some of the recommended radiation protection measures need to be updated. Moreover, there is a lack of radiation protection education and training among staff members.

Summary: The coexistence of frailty and sarcopenia in heart failure outpatients was studied in this research. The study found a relatively low frequency of coexistence, suggesting that both conditions should be individually addressed and screened in clinical practice. Factors associated with having concomitant frailty and sarcopenia included being a woman, older age, having heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and using certain medications, while the use of statins showed an inverse effect. The study suggests that interventions such as nutritional and mental health interventions and exercise training may benefit these patients.
