Numerous health benefits are attributed to the n-3 long-chain PUFA (n-3 LCPUFA); EPA and DHA. A systematic literature review was conducted to investigate factors, other than diet, that are associated with the n-3 LCPUFA levels. The inclusion criteria were papers written in English, carried out in adult non-pregnant humans, n-3 LCPUFA measured in blood or tissue, data from cross-sectional studies, or baseline data from intervention studies. The search revealed 5076 unique articles of which seventy were included in the qualitative synthesis. Three main groups of factors potentially associated with n-3 LCPUFA levels were identified: (1) unmodifiable factors (sex, genetics, age), (2) modifiable factors (body size, physical activity, alcohol, smoking) and (3) bioavailability factors (chemically bound form of supplements, krill oil v. fish oil, and conversion of plant-derived alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to n-3 LCPUFA). Results showed that factors positively associated with n-3 LCPUFA levels were age, female sex (women younger than 50 years), wine consumption and the TAG form. Factors negatively associated with n-3 LCPUFA levels were genetics, BMI (if erythrocyte EPA and DHA levels are <5 center dot 6 %) and smoking. The evidence for girth, physical activity and krill oil v. fish oil associated with n-3 LCPUFA levels is inconclusive. There is also evidence that higher ALA consumption leads to increased levels of EPA but not DHA. In conclusion, sex, age, BMI, alcohol consumption, smoking and the form of n-3 LCPUFA are all factors that need to be taken into account in n-3 LCPUFA research.

Omega-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: Are They Beneficial for Physical and Cognitive Functioning in Older Adults?

R. Erhardt, B. R. Cardoso, B. J. Meyer, S. Brownell, S. O'Connell, S. Mirzaee, R. L. Duckham, H. Macpherson

Summary: This study examined the relationship between circulating omega-3 LCPUFA levels and dietary intake of DHA and EPA with cognition and physical function in community-dwelling older adults at risk of dementia. Results showed that higher dietary intake of DHA and EPA were associated with better cognitive function, while higher dietary EPA intake was linked to better attention and mobility. No associations were found between erythrocyte omega-3 LCPUFA levels and cognitive or functional performance measures in this cohort.

The effect of omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids on aggressive behaviour in adult male prisoners: a structured study protocol for a multi-centre, double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial and translation into policy and practice

Barbara J. Meyer, Mitchell K. Byrne, Colin H. Cortie, Natalie Parletta, Alison Jones, Simon Eckermann, Tony Butler, David Greenberg, Marijka Batterham, Francesca Fernandez, Peter W. Schofield, Pia C. Winberg, Kate Bowles, Jean Dally, Anne-Maria Martin, Luke Grant

Summary: The study aims to investigate the impact of n-3 LCPUFA on aggressive behavior in adult male prisoners through a randomized controlled trial, collecting data by assessing IBOS, questionnaires, and blood tests. The results are expected to provide recommendations on nutrition for prisoner policies and contribute to a broader community approach to preventative mental health practices.

Fingertip Whole Blood as an Indicator of Omega-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Changes during Dose-Response Supplementation in Women: Comparison with Plasma and Erythrocyte Fatty Acids

Barbara J. Meyer, Cassandra Sparkes, Andrew J. Sinclair, Robert A. Gibson, Paul L. Else

Summary: The study compared the sensitivity of fingertip whole blood to reflect habitual dietary and dose-dependent supplemental omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 LCPUFA) intake in premenopausal women with venous erythrocytes and plasma fatty acids. The results showed that fingertip whole blood, erythrocytes, and plasma were all similarly effective in reflecting dietary n-3 LCPUFA intake and dose-dependent changes after supplementation. Fingertip whole blood can be considered as an effective alternative biomarker for assessing n-3 LCPUFA intake in premenopausal women.

Associations between Omega-3 Index, Dopaminergic Genetic Variants and Aggressive and Metacognitive Traits: A Study in Adult Male Prisoners

Francesca Fernandez, Mitchell K. Byrne, Marijka Batterham, Luke Grant, Barbara J. Meyer

Summary: In this study on male prisoners, associations were found between dopaminergic genetic polymorphisms and aggressive behavior and executive functions, but no significant correlation was found between the Omega-3 Index and these genetic polymorphisms. This highlights the importance of genetic predisposition in aggressive behavior, memory dysfunction, and attention-deficit disorder.

Effects of a 6-Month Multifaceted Diet and Exercise Intervention on Cognition in Older Adults at Risk of Cognitive Decline: The PONDER Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Randomized Trial

Helen Macpherson, Sarah Brownell, Elizabeth Harris, Rachel L. Duckham, Stella O'Connell, Barbara J. Meyer, Sam Mirzaee, Robin M. Daly

Summary: The study investigated the effects of a 6-month multifaceted intervention on cognition and physical function in older adults with subjective memory impairment. The intervention included exercise training and a supplement enriched with omega-3, vitamin D, and protein. Results showed no significant benefits to cognitive or physical function, except for improvements in lean mass.

'Beyond the Bump': an online wellbeing and lifestyle pilot program during COVID-19 for first year postpartum mothers: a research article

Summary: Establishing a healthy lifestyle post-delivery is important, but access to postpartum health programs has been difficult due to COVID-19 restrictions. This study developed and evaluated an online program, Beyond the Bump (BtB), to improve access to health education and support for physical activity in the postpartum. The results showed a strong need for postpartum support, with interest in expert education and exercise. However, attendance to the program was low and more research is needed to improve uptake and value placed on mothers' wellbeing and physical activity.

Physical Activity, but Not Glycaemic Load, Is Associated with Lower Real-Time Glycaemic Control in Free-Living Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Isabelle R. Jardine, Hannah E. Christie, Kate Oetsch, Angelo Sabag, Meredith Kennedy, Barbara J. Meyer, Monique E. Francois

Summary: Maintaining blood glucose within the target range is the primary treatment goal for women with gestational diabetes mellitus. This pilot study explored the associations of glycaemic load, carbohydrates, and physical activity parameters on blood glucose concentrations in free-living women with GDM. The study found that physical activity, specifically the total stepping time, had a significant relationship with lower 24-hour glucose iAUC and nocturnal glucose, suggesting it may be an effective strategy to improve maternal blood glucose concentrations.

Oral Supplementation with Algal Sulphated Polysaccharide in Subjects with Inflammatory Skin Conditions: A Randomised Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial and Baseline Dietary Differences

Lauren A. Roach, Barbara J. Meyer, J. Helen Fitton, Pia Winberg

Summary: This study investigated the effects of a dietary seaweed extract, SXRG84, on individuals with inflammatory skin conditions. A subgroup analysis of a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial was conducted, with participants ingesting SXRG84 extract or placebo for six weeks each. Significant differences in inflammatory markers and skin assessments were observed at six and twelve weeks, indicating that SXRG84 reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines and improved skin conditions for some participants.
