Summary: Prescription opioid misuse following shoulder surgery is a major issue, with age, gender, and pain scores being significant predictors of opioid consumption. Based on the study findings, it is recommended to prescribe 112.5 MME for arthroscopic shoulder procedures and 75 MME for shoulder arthroplasties.

Summary: A recent study has shown that legislation in Ohio limiting opioid prescriptions after shoulder arthroscopy has successfully reduced the use of opioids. Preoperative use of opioids, benzodiazepines, and GABA analogues is associated with increased postoperative opioid dosage.

Summary: This study explored the trends in opioid abuse and dependence worldwide using the World Health Organization's pharmacovigilance database. Four distinct clusters of countries with similar profiles of opioid abuse and dependence were identified, with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States having the highest reported risk.

Summary: The opioid epidemic has had a profound impact on American public health and politics, with research linking community opioid crisis severity to political behavior. However, individual perceptions are influenced by factors such as actual data, racial perceptions, and geographical location. Despite this, these perceptions did not significantly impact voter behavior in the 2018 midterm election.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of opioid prescription-limiting legislation in Ohio on postoperative opioid dosing after shoulder arthroplasty, showing significant reductions in opioid MME dosing in the 90-day postoperative period, particularly in opioid-naive patients in the first 30 days postoperatively. Preoperative opioid tolerance is correlated with higher MME dosing after shoulder arthroplasty.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of opioid misuse among reservation-based American Indian adolescents was significantly higher compared to national rates. It suggests the need for increased culturally appropriate evidence-based efforts and policies to address the unique social, economic, and health issues faced by tribal communities.

Summary: This study aimed to predict the rate of opioid dependence after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) using the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT). The results showed that ORT was not predictive of the risk of opioid dependence or quantity of opioids prescribed after ARCR surgery. Furthermore, there was no significant correlation found between the ORT scores and the outcomes.

Summary: The study evaluated the incidence of implant-related osteolysis after implantation of two types of all-suture anchors during remplissage for Hill-Sachs lesions in shoulder instability using CT. Reveal that relevant bone osteolytic defects are common at 1-year-follow-up, with one in six anchors developing cystic defects larger than twice the volume of the resected bone during implantation. This bone loss effectively increases the size and depth of the Hill-Sachs lesions but does not seem to affect short-term clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study examines the impact of opioid abuse on subprime auto lending using a difference-in-differences framework. The research finds that an increase in county-level opioid abuse leads to higher loan defaults. Moreover, it shows that traditional credit scoring methods fail to predict loan performance deterioration associated with opioid addiction. The weak predictive ability of traditional credit measures results in higher loan costs for subprime borrowers in opioid-afflicted areas, with an increase of 5.7%.

Summary: Prescription opioid use is common before and after liver transplant, with intermittent and chronic use largely persisting, and a small development of new chronic use posttransplant. Pretransplant opioid use is a risk factor for persistent or increased posttransplant opioid use, while having hepatobiliary malignancy is protective. Improving pain management and optimizing opioid use before and after liver transplant is critical to minimize the morbidity of long-term opioid use.

Summary: Despite the low prevalence of cannabis use in this surgical population, cannabis users reported higher clinical pain, poorer quality of life indicators, and more opioid misuse before and after surgery. However, both cannabis users and non-cannabis users showed improvement in most domains at 3 and 6 months post surgery, with no differences in surgical outcomes between the two groups at the 6-month mark.
