Role of the cellular factor CTCF in the regulation of bovine leukemia virus latency and three-dimensional chromatin organization

Maxime Bellefroid, Anthony Rodari, Mathilde Galais, Peter H. L. Krijger, Sjoerd J. D. Tjalsma, Lorena Nestola, Estelle Plant, Erica S. M. Vos, Sara Cristinelli, Benoit Van Driessche, Caroline Vanhulle, Amina Ait-Ammar, Arsene Burny, Angela Ciuffi, Wouter de Laat, Carine Van Lint

Summary: The tumoral development induced by bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is a multifactorial phenomenon. The cellular CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) plays a critical role in regulating BLV transcriptional activities and in the deregulation of the three-dimensional chromatin architecture surrounding the BLV integration site.

Efficacy, durability, and tolerability of dolutegravir/lamivudine and dolutegravir/rilpivirine for the treatment of HIV in a real-world setting in Belgium

Rakan Nasreddine, Jean Cyr Yombi, Gilles Darcis, Eric Florence, Sabine D. Allard, Marie-Angelique De Scheerder, Sophie Henrard, Remy Demeester, Peter Messiaen, Nathalie Ausselet, Matthias Loeckx, Marc Delforge, Stephane De Wit

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy, durability, and tolerability of dolutegravir/lamivudine and dolutegravir/rilpivirine in a real-world setting. The results showed that both regimens were effective and well-tolerated for both treatment-naive and treatment-experienced patients. The study also found that these regimens may lead to a slight increase in weight.

The Dynamic Relationship between the Intention and Final Decision for the COVID-19 Booster: A Study among Students and Staff at the University of Liege, Belgium

Marine Paridans, Justine Monseur, Anne-Francoise Donneau, Nicolas Gillain, Eddy Husson, Dieudonne Leclercq, Christelle Meuris, Gilles Darcis, Michel Moutschen, Claude Saegerman, Laurent Gillet, Fabrice Bureau, Michele Guillaume, Benoit Petre

Summary: This study examines the intentions and decision-making process regarding COVID-19 vaccine boosters among a university population. The findings suggest that a significant percentage of participants changed their minds between their initial intention and final decision. Health literacy and previous intentions regarding the COVID-19 primal vaccination were related to the intentions, while factors such as previous COVID-19 infection, past intentions for primal vaccination, and neutralizing antibody levels influenced the decision not to get vaccinated. These results highlight the importance of personalized approaches to decision-making for individuals.

Ferulic acid derivatives block coronaviruses HCoV-229E and SARS-CoV-2 replication in vitro

Sebastien Pasquereau, Mathilde Galais, Maxime Bellefroid, Irene Pachon Angona, Stephanie Morot-Bizot, Lhassane Ismaili, Carine Van Lint, Georges Herbein

Summary: In this study, several compounds were tested for their antiviral activity against coronaviruses, and one compound, FAD LIJ2P40, showed low cytotoxicity and significant reduction in viral titer of SARS-CoV-2, which opens up the possibility for further evaluation as a potential treatment for Covid-19.

Efficacy, durability, and tolerability of bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide for the treatment of HIV in a real-world setting in Belgium

Rakan Nasreddine, Eric Florence, Jean Cyr Yombi, Sophie Henrard, Gilles Darcis, Jens Van Praet, Linos D. Vandekerckhove, Sabine Allard, Remy Demeester, Peter Messiaen, Nathalie Ausselet, Marc Delforge, Stephane De Wit

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness, durability, and tolerability of BIC/FTC/TAF in treating HIV patients in a real-world setting in Belgium. The results showed that the overall virological suppression rate was 93.5% after 48 weeks, indicating excellent effectiveness and tolerability with rare occurrence of drug resistance.

A complex network of transcription factors and epigenetic regulators involved in bovine leukemia virus transcriptional regulation

Estelle Plant, Maxime Bellefroid, Carine Van Lint

Summary: Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is the cause of enzootic bovine leukosis, which is characterized by the proliferation of B cells in cattle. BLV has the ability to remain dormant in the host, evade the immune system, and promote tumor development. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms regulating BLV transcription units, including cis-regulatory elements and epigenetic modifications. It also discusses the role of BLV miRNAs and antisense transcripts in tumorigenesis and the relevance of BLV as a model for studying HTLV-1.

Schulte, Ulrike Protzer, Lisa Fricke, Christof Winter, Mari E. K. Niemi, Mattia Cordioli, Pilar Delgado, Israel Fernandez-Cadenas

Summary: This study aimed to determine if patients with IS-COV are associated with a specific aetiology of IS. The researchers used genetic analysis to identify genome regions that correlated between the IS-COV cohort and different subtypes of IS, finding three genomic regions associated with LAA and CES. They also found four genetic loci related to specific genes. The results suggest that IS-COV cases are genetically similar to LAA and CES subtypes.

Cluster Analysis Identifies Distinct Patterns of T-Cell and Humoral Immune Responses Evolution Following a Third Dose of SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine in People Living with HIV

Majdouline El Moussaoui, Salome Desmecht, Nicolas Lambert, Nathalie Maes, Joachim Braghini, Nicole Marechal, Celine Quintana, Karine Briquet, Stephanie Gofflot, Francoise Toussaint, Marie-Pierre Hayette, Pieter Vermeersch, Laurence Lutteri, Celine Gregoire, Yves Beguin, Souad Rahmouni, Michel Moutschen, Daniel Desmecht, Gilles Darcis

Summary: By analyzing immune parameters, we found heterogeneity in immune responses to the COVID-19 vaccine among people living with HIV. Different patterns of immune response may require distinct strategies for intervention. Prior or breakthrough infection enhances the vaccine efficacy and should be considered in global vaccine strategies for people living with HIV.

Virus-Specific T-Cell Therapy for Viral Infections of the Central Nervous System: A Review

Nicolas Lambert, Majdouline El Moussaoui, Frederic Baron, Pierre Maquet, Gilles Darcis

Summary: Opportunistic viral infections of the central nervous system are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients. Antiviral treatments are usually ineffective, so the prognosis depends on timely immune reconstitution. Virus-specific T-cells are increasingly being recognized as a valuable tool to treat these infections, and have potential applications in the treatment of progressive multiple sclerosis and EBV-associated central nervous system inflammatory disease. The key future milestones of this treatment strategy are also discussed.

Clinical Outcomes of Third-Generation Cephalosporin Definitive Therapy for Bloodstream Infections Due to Enterobacterales with Potential AmpC Induction: A Single-Center Retrospective Study

Gilles Vossius, Cecile Meex, Filip Moerman, Marie Thys, Marie Ernst, Marie-Eve Bourgeois, Lea Wagner, Thibaut Delahaye, Gilles Darcis

Summary: The study aimed to assess the impact of third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs) vs. alternative antibiotics on clinical outcomes in bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to AmpC-inducible Enterobacterales (AmpC-E). The findings suggest that 3GC definitive therapy may not result in poorer clinical outcomes for the treatment of BSIs caused by AmpC-E.
