Recent studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation beneficially decreases oxidative stress (OS) parameters; however, there is no consensus on this subject. In this systematic review and meta-analysis we aimed to investigate the effect of vitamin 13 supplementation on OS parameters. We searched electronic databases including Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library up to July 2018 without any language restriction. Trials were reviewed using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) and Cochrane handbook. To compare the effects of vitamin D with placebo, standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were pooled using random effects model. Across thirteen clinical trials, we found that vitamin D supplementation increased serum levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (SMD: 0.54 mmol/L, 95% CI: 0.29 to 0.79; I-2 = 65.4%, P = 0.001) and glutathione (GSH) (SMD: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.11 to 0.54, P = 0.003; I-2 = 61.2%, P = 0.001). Besides, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration decreased significantly (SMD: -0.40 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.60 to -0.21, P < 0.001) following vitamin D supplementation compared to placebo. However, its effects on nitric oxide (NO) was not significant (0.17, 95% CI: -0.10 to 0.45, I-2 = 71.1%, P = 0.21). Finally, we showed that vitamin D supplementation can improve OS parameters; however, this finding may not be clinically significant. Further large prospective clinical trials are needed to confirm the effect of vitamin D supplement on other OS parameters.

Effects of coffee consumption on arterial stiffness and endothelial function: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

Banafsheh Jafari Azad, Javad Heshmati, Elnaz Daneshzad, Andriko Palmowski

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of multiple studies, it was found that coffee intake has a beneficial short-term effect on endothelial function, while it may have an unfavorable impact on arterial stiffness. The long-term effects of coffee intake on endothelial function and arterial stiffness remain controversial.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of UDCA in treating neonates with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia undergoing phototherapy. The results showed that UDCA combined with phototherapy enhanced the decrease in total bilirubin level, but it did not decrease the duration of phototherapy and hospital stay from a clinical point of view.

Summary: There is a global burden of musculoskeletal disorders with increasing prevalence, deaths, and DALYs. In 2017, the global prevalence of cases approached 1.3 billion, with death and DALY rates of 121.3 thousand and 138.7 million, respectively. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders is higher in women and increases with age.

Summary: The intake of OMEGA-3 FAs has a positive impact on plasma adiponectin levels but does not significantly affect leptin levels. Larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate the effect of OMEGA-3 FAs on leptin levels in specific diseases.

Summary: This study identified a decline in the burden of tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer globally, but with some countries experiencing an increase. Incidence and death rates were higher in males than females, and increased with aging population. There were generally positive associations between sociodemographic index and DALY rates in different countries.

Summary: The maternal mortality ratio is an important indicator of healthcare system quality, and despite progress in reducing maternal mortality in Iran, efforts are still needed to eliminate preventable maternal deaths. The study evaluated 80 cases of maternal deaths in 20 hospitals, finding direct and indirect causes to be significant factors in maternal mortality, with an increase noticed even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, implementing a comprehensive approach for high-risk pregnancies is critical.

The criticism of bases and claims of post-structural geography

Summary: In contrast to structuralists, who aimed for a fixed framework of meanings, post-structuralists believed that knowledge is not constrained by fixed structures and meanings, but rather fluctuates and evolves through a continuous process of semantic dialectics. In the field of geography, meanings are produced in the communication between spaces, and there are no independent meanings and identities for geographical space and place alone. The authors of this article argue that post-structuralism is a non-scientific and non-epistemic viewpoint, and it has conceptual and epistemic contradictions.
