Summary: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing among the aging population, presenting challenges in management due to patient heterogeneity, comorbidities, susceptibility to hypoglycemia, increased dependence on care, and frailty. This review focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of T2DM in older individuals, new evidence on frailty and sarcopenia, clinical difficulties related to age-associated comorbidities, and implications for guidelines and therapeutic options, highlighting the impact of T2DM on an aging society.

Summary: This study investigated the association between T2DM and cognitive function, revealing that T2DM patients performed worse in memory-related domains and showed a more significant decline in cognitive function. Further large-scale prospective studies are needed to clarify T2DM-related predictors of cognitive decline and their potential impact on the abilities of diabetes patients to perform self-management tasks.

Summary: This study examined gender differences in cognitive function among older adults with diabetes. Women with diabetes showed poorer performance in global cognitive function and executive function compared to men. Various factors such as age, education, sleep quality, HbA1c, and depressive symptoms were associated with cognitive function among both men and women, but their correlations differed.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of executive function and subjective cognitive function on daily self-management behaviors in older adults with T2D. The results showed that decreased executive function was associated with poorer adherence to physician contact behaviors, while subjective cognitive function was not related to any self-management behaviors.

Summary: Depression is common in older adults with type 2 diabetes and is associated with cognitive decline. Apathy was found to be specifically linked to faster decline in executive function among older adults with type 2 diabetes, highlighting the diversity of depression as a clinical construct.

Summary: This study found that greater variability in adiposity indices in individuals with type 2 diabetes was associated with a higher risk of incident heart failure, independently of traditional risk factors and baseline adiposity levels.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether cardiac structure and function abnormalities associated with dysglycemia could explain the increased risk of death or heart failure. The findings showed that cardiac abnormalities partially explained the increased risk of events in patients with diabetes.

Summary: This study estimated the medical costs associated with major diabetes-related complications and treatment procedures among elderly Medicare beneficiaries with type 2 diabetes. The study found that the costs of diabetes complications are substantial, with kidney failure treated by transplant, kidney failure treated by dialysis, and lower-extremity amputation being the costliest complications. Congestive heart failure accounted for the largest share of total complication costs.

Summary: The trial compared the cardiovascular and renal outcomes of weekly injections of efpeglenatide versus a placebo in participants with type 2 diabetes and a history of cardiovascular disease or current kidney disease. The study found that the risk of cardiovascular events was lower with efpeglenatide treatment, and a composite renal outcome event was also reduced.

Summary: This study evaluates gender differences in body composition in pre-frail diabetics and their association with physical performance, cognitive function, and perceived health. The results show that there are insignificant differences in body composition, physical function, cognition, and perceived health within gender in pre-frail diabetics, except for certain measurements in females. However, there are significant differences between genders in muscle mass, quality, functional and cognitive status in pre-frail diabetics.

Summary: Finerenone therapy improved cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and stage 2 to 4 CKD with moderately elevated albuminuria or stage 1 or 2 CKD with severely elevated albuminuria, compared to placebo. The risk of the primary outcome event was significantly lower in the finerenone group, primarily driven by a reduction in hospitalization for heart failure.

Summary: This study implemented screening for left ventricular dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and found a small percentage of patients at high risk for heart failure. Male gender, prior stroke, chronic kidney disease, and newly detected atrial fibrillation were significantly associated with elevated NT-proBNP levels. The study suggests that NT-proBNP and ECG screening can aid in early detection of cardiovascular complications and improve long-term outcomes.

Summary: This study explored the role of romantic partners as a source of academic support during times of academic stress, finding that satisfaction with this support is positively associated with student engagement. While romantic partners can help buffer against academic stress, they may not be the main source of support based on low levels of academic support seeking.

Summary: Successful weight loss early in treatment plays a crucial role in long-term weight management success for adolescents. This study examines household factors, particularly household chaos, as potential predictors of early weight management success among adolescents participating in an outpatient weight management program. The findings highlight the importance of assessing and intervening on chaos in the household, as it may negatively impact early treatment outcomes for adolescents with obesity.

Summary: This study examined the cultural differences in romantic and sexual attitudes and experiences, as well as their associations with mental health and well-being among young adults in India and the United States. The results showed that American participants endorsed more liberal sexual attitudes and engaged in more sexual activities, while Indian participants showed more pro-romantic attitudes but reported more mental health problems. The cultural effects were stronger for women, and the associations between romantic and sexual attitudes and experiences differed across cultural groups.
