Summary: Bacteria of the genus Burkholderia, including pathogenic species, show intrinsic drug resistance. Auranofin analogs such as MS-40 and MS-40S exhibit antibiotic activity against Burkholderia clinical isolates, killing stationary-phase cells without inducing multistep resistance, and demonstrating low toxicity in model organisms. Further investigations are needed to explore the therapeutic potential of these compounds against Burkholderia infections.

Summary: A cluster of 8 Burkholderia cepacia complex infections was associated with contaminated ECMO water heaters, highlighting the potential risks of water-based care for vulnerable patients. This cluster was identified through whole-genome sequencing and environmental sampling, leading to implementation of mitigation measures and removal of water heaters from clinical service.

Summary: The study found that Burkholderia multivorans, a pathogenic bacterium within the Burkholderia cepacia complex, primarily spreads among cystic fibrosis patients through environmental sources with rare cases of patient-to-patient transmission. Genomic analysis of an endemic strain infecting multiple patients revealed significant genomic diversity between patients, suggesting the presence of a microdiverse reservoir for this strain with active diversification. Additionally, the study identified specific genomic adaptations across multiple patients, indicating that the genomic background of a strain may dictate its route of adaptation within the cystic fibrosis lung.

Summary: An outbreak of B. cepacia urinary tract infection in 71 patients was caused by contaminated single-use anesthetic gel used during invasive urological diagnostic and treatments. The contamination was confirmed in samples from one used cystoscope and three anesthetic gels from the same batch.

Summary: The usefulness of CRP, PCT, and IL6 as biomarkers in predicting high-risk episodes in pediatric cancer patients with fever was evaluated. The results showed that IL6-1, PCT-2, and CRP-2vs1 had a strong and independent correlation with high-risk episodes.

Summary: A novel and rapid RAA assay targeting the 16S rRNA gene was developed for early detection of BCC pathogens. The assay showed high sensitivity and specificity, making it suitable for immunocompromised or patients with underlying diseases. The method could be completed in a short time and has the potential for effective treatment guidance.

Summary: The study investigated neonatal sepsis in six hospitals in Sana'a city, Yemen, identifying a high proportion of neonatal sepsis with antibiotic-resistant Burkholderia cepacia as the most common pathogen causing early and late-onset sepsis. Vaginal delivery was identified as an independent risk factor for neonatal sepsis. The findings highlight the emerging threat of multidrug-resistant bacteria in neonatal units in Yemen and emphasize the need for evidence-based management of neonatal sepsis.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical characteristics and prognosis of Burkholderia cepacia (BC) infection in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients. The results showed that BC infection increased the risk of death in patients, especially when combined with respiratory failure. Procalcitonin and septic shock were identified as independent risk factors for death.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors, antimicrobial susceptibility, and clinical characteristics of B. cepacia infection in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis. The results showed that B. cepacia mainly occurred in children in the ICU, and was most sensitive to ceftazidime, meropenem, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of four laboratory aerosol samplers for collecting Burkholderia pseudomallei aerosols generated from different types of liquid suspensions. The results showed that sampler performance depended on the composition of the suspension, with samplers collecting onto dry substrates performing poorly when the initial suspension did not contain anything to protect the bacteria against desiccation. The findings will help inform comparisons between different studies and guide sampler choices for future studies in both controlled laboratory settings and field studies with unknown aerosol composition.
