In this paper, the investigation was focused on the CO2 permeability through CNCs coating at various RH values, comparing with the O-2 one, aiming to evaluate the potential usage in all the applications of modified atmosphere packaging for intermediate-low moisture foods where the role of carbon dioxide is essential for shelf life extension. For this purpose, PET films were coated with characterized CNCs, obtained from cotton linters, and the CO2 permeance was measured as a function of increasing RH values (from 0% to 80%). After calculating the diffusion and solubility coefficients, and estimating the CO2/O-2 selectivity, the possible evolution of different modified atmospheres has been theoretically calculated. The results obtained, let hypothesize that, in consequence of a very high CO2/O-2 permeability selectivity, the CNCs coated films can be useful in some modified atmosphere packaging applications, in a range of RH typical of many medium-high RH food products.

Summary: The study found that both globe artichoke genotypes are suitable for processing as RTC products, with Opera F1 showing superior performance in color, texture, and chemical indexes, while Spinoso sardo exhibited lower mass loss over storage time. The addition of EO emitter can slow down oxygen consumption, better preserve texture, and effectively control PPO activity and antioxidant retention.

Performance comparison of coatings based on cellulose nanocrystals and microfibrillated cellulose for food packaging

Ghislain Fotie, Stefano Gazzotti, Marco Aldo Ortenzi, Sara Limbo, Luciano Piergiovanni

Summary: This article compares the gas barrier performance of plastic films coated with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) obtained from cotton linters. The CNCs were chemically isolated using ammonium persulfate (APS) hydrolysis, while the MFC was obtained mechanically either with or without APS-assisted pre-treatment. Mechanical tests and various characterization techniques were performed on the samples. Coated PET films were then evaluated for water contact angle, transparency, opacity, water vapor transmission rate, and oxygen transmission rate. The findings show that MFCaps-based coated films have better oxygen barrier properties at higher relative humidity and higher residue levels during degradation compared to CNCs.
