Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are considered as a potential renewable and biodegradable packaging material with desirable properties. However, neat CNC films are too rigid and brittle for packaging applications. By adding different additives, the properties of CNC films can be improved, such as enhancing transparency, improving water durability, and changing hydrophilicity. All CNC films show sufficient oxygen barrier properties.

Summary: In this study, electrospinning technology was used to successfully process EVOH44 copolymer with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), resulting in hybrid nanocomposite films with improved properties. Increasing the CNCs content led to enhancements in mechanical properties, but also accompanied by reductions in certain aspects of performance. Furthermore, the oxygen barrier properties of the films remained high at different relative humidities, demonstrating great potential as barrier materials for food packaging.

Summary: This review introduces two extremely important technologies, atmospheric pressure CO2-based modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and high pressure CO2 non-thermal pasteurization (HPCD), for controlling microorganisms. CO2-based MAP delays the growth of microorganisms by replacing the surrounding air, while HPCD achieves sterilization using subcritical or supercritical CO2. However, there are still challenges to overcome in both technologies. The action mechanism of CO2 on microorganisms, including the changes in pH, proteins, enzymes, and cell membrane, needs further exploration.

Summary: In this study, citrus pectin coating with improved barrier and antioxidant properties was prepared by embedding with functional cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). The addition of cellulose nanocrystals grafted with p-coumaric acid (CNC-P) improved the coating barrier properties, leading to a decrease in water vapor and oxygen permeability from the coating. The coating containing CNC-P also exhibited a stronger inhibition effect on the browning process of fresh-cut fruits.

Summary: High levels of carbon dioxide inhibit the growth of microorganisms. In this study, twenty strains of fungi and yeasts were isolated from habitats with enriched carbon dioxide concentration. The study found that elevated levels of CO2 led to changes in fatty acid profiles, resulting in membrane fluidization and potential membrane malfunction, as well as growth inhibition in the strains.

Summary: To address food safety and environmental concerns, researchers have developed eco-friendly antibacterial packaging materials by modifying cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and investigating their effects on compostable materials. The modified CNCs showed excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli, and the resulting packaging materials exhibited improved mechanical strength, lower gas permeability, faster compost disintegration, and extended shelf life for wrapped pork samples.

Summary: Nanocellulose (NC) has garnered significant attention as a green packaging material for its ability to protect food from pathogens and biodegrade after disposal. This review explores various methods of preparing NC-based films, including layer by layer assembly, electrospinning, coating, extrusion, casting, vacuum filtration, and immersion. The article summarizes the interaction between microorganisms and NC, focusing on the impact of NC on microbial adhesion and the influence of microorganisms on the degradation of NC-based films. The challenges of NC in packaging, such as hydrophobicity, antibacterial properties, and industrialization are discussed, along with future perspectives for NC-based films as packaging materials.

Summary: This article compares the gas barrier performance of plastic films coated with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) obtained from cotton linters. The CNCs were chemically isolated using ammonium persulfate (APS) hydrolysis, while the MFC was obtained mechanically either with or without APS-assisted pre-treatment. Mechanical tests and various characterization techniques were performed on the samples. Coated PET films were then evaluated for water contact angle, transparency, opacity, water vapor transmission rate, and oxygen transmission rate. The findings show that MFCaps-based coated films have better oxygen barrier properties at higher relative humidity and higher residue levels during degradation compared to CNCs.
