New industrial revolution - The 4th industrial revolution must be a remarkable milestone for the second decade of the twenty-first century. Many countries are competing to innovate their manufacturing chains for eco-friendly and energy-efficient productions. Although this green or sustainable manufacturing system evolves under the support of cyber-physical system (or digital twin) based on ICT technology, industrial robots also play important roles in this speedy, flexible and effective manufacturing chains. Recently, low-cost industrial robots or collaborative robots, are rising in a highly interactive environment with humans. Although an industrial robot consists of many important components such as mechanical parts (kinematic structure and reducer) and electric parts (servo motor, driver, sensors, and controller), precision reducer takes approximately 25% of material-cost and governs important performance indices of industrial robots. This paper presents review of high precision reducers (HPRs) for industrial robots driving 4th industrial revolution. First, we provide HPRs market along with industrial robots. According to previous studies, HPRs for industrial robots can be classified based on their principles: planetary reducer, cycloid reducer, and harmonic drive (HD). Then, principle, characteristics, and three main performances (hysteresis, rotational transmission error (RTE) and efficiency) of HPRs are discussed. In addition, compensation methods overcoming accuracy limits of HPRs are summarized. Finally, other applications of HPRs except industrial robots are presented.

Optimizing the Superhydrophobicity of the Composite PDMS/PUA Film Produced by a R2R System

Anh-Duc Pham, Quang Bang Tao, Pham Cam Nam

Summary: Maintaining the efficiency of solar cell panels by keeping their surface clean is a tedious task. This study proposes a simple and cost-effective method of fabricating a flexible and transparent superhydrophobic film. The film's superhydrophobicity is achieved through a combination of surface roughness and low surface energy. The film demonstrates high mechanical durability and flexibility, making it a potential protective cover for solar cells.

An Investigation on Pressure-Specific Volume-Temperature Behaviors of a Thermoplastic Under Industrial Conditions Using a Hot Runner Manifold

Trieu Khoa Nguyen, Anh-Duc Pham

Summary: In this study, a new method for investigating the pressure-specific volume-temperature (P-V-T) behaviors of a thermoplastic in melt state was proposed and tested. The coefficients of the modified two-domain Tait equation of state (EOS) in the melt state were obtained through analyzing the volume variation of molten plastic in the barrel of an injection molding machine (IMM) at different temperatures and pressures and conducting nonlinear regression. The simulation results demonstrated the possibility of using an IMM and a hot runner manifold to study the P-V-T properties of thermoplastics under industrial conditions, providing insights into product defects caused by plastic characteristics and offering P-V-T data for new materials.

The Prediction of the Angular Transmission Error of a Harmonic Drive by Measuring Noncontact Tooth Profile and Considering Three-dimensional Tooth Engagement

Beom-Seok Kim, Seung-Tae Jeong, Hyeong-Joon Ahn

Summary: This paper presents a novel method of predicting the angular transmission error (ATE) of a harmonic drive by measuring noncontact tooth profile and considering 3-dimensional tooth engagement. The ATE errors of 9 harmonic drives assembled with 3 flex splines (F/S) and 3 circular splines (C/S) were predicted and the superiority of the proposed method was verified by experimentally measuring their ATE.

Characterization of an FDM-3D Printed Moldcore in a Thermoforming Process Using Taguchi in Conjunction with Lumped-Capacitance Method

Trieu Khoa Nguyen, Kiet Chau Duc, Anh-Duc Pham

Summary: In this study, a new post-processing method was experimentally investigated for improving the surface finish and reducing heat absorption of FDM-3D printed moldcore, aiming to broaden the application scope of FDM. The results showed that chemical treatment with dimethylketone improved surface roughness, while aluminum spray coating reduced heat absorption of ABS filament samples. This low-cost post-processing technique is easily applicable to both lab-scale and manufacturing scales, especially for low-volume production or prototype fabrication.

Three-Phase Coil Configurations for the Radial Suspension of a Bearingless Slice Motor

Hyeong-Joon Ahn, Ngoc Vu Vo, Shenghe Jin

Summary: The demand for energy-saving, high-efficiency motors is increasing due to the widespread use of electric cars, as well as the emphasis on energy conservation and environmental protection. To address the issues of frictional losses and component failure in electric motor systems, non-contact supporting motors have been developed. This paper proposes a generalized three-phase coil configuration for the radial suspension of a bearingless slice motor, and presents a design problem formulation and a minimal realization method for this configuration. Finite element analysis is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed coil configuration for bearingless motors with various slot numbers.
