Maize or corn is a versatile grain crop with diverse uses. Sweet corn is a type of speciality corn used as fresh or canned vegetable. It has sugar content greater than 25 % during the milking stage. The sweetness of sweet corn is due to a spontaneous mutation in the su (sugary) gene of the field corn, which controls conversion of sugar to starch inside the endosperm of the corn kernel. A number of sweet corn varieties and hybrids have been developed incorporating these recessive mutation(s). Package of practices for sweet corn cultivation and post harvest management have been standardized and widely popularized. There are several health benefits associated with sweet corn and a number of dishes using sweet corn are becoming increasingly popular in India. Apart from the sweet corn, which is a special type of corn, normal maize has also significant contribution in the global sugar industry, especially in North America. About one half of all sweeteners consumed in USA are derived from corn. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is produced by converting corn starch to sugars through enzymatic processes. It has replaced the use of cane and beet sugar in food and beverage industry to a great extent. Sweet corn and HFCS, together position corn as an important sugar producing crop of the world.

Transgenerational conditioned male fertility of HD-ZIP IV transcription factor mutant ocl4: impact on 21-nt phasiRNA accumulation in pre-meiotic maize anthers

Pranjal Yadava, Saleh Tamim, Han Zhang, Chong Teng, Xue Zhou, Blake C. Meyers, Virginia Walbot

Summary: The maize gene Maize Outer cell layer 4 (ocl4) is essential for robust male fertility and the biogenesis of 21-nt phasiRNAs. Fertility in ocl4 is favored in warm conditions, with partial restoration of phasiRNAs. Additionally, conditioned fertile ocl4 anthers exhibit anatomical abnormalities and can maintain fertility over several generations.

Analysis of Nutritional Quality Attributes and Their Inter-Relationship in Maize Inbred Lines for Sustainable Livelihood

Sapna Langyan, Zahoor A. Dar, D. P. Chaudhary, J. C. Shekhar, Susila Herlambang, Hesham El Enshasy, R. Z. Sayyed, S. Rakshit

Summary: This study aimed to understand the variability and inter-relationship among various nutritional quality attributes of maize kernels. The results showed wide variability among protein, starch, and 100-kernel weight, with protein exhibiting a significant negative correlation with starch and 100-kernel weight. Inbred lines were identified as potential donors for developing high cultivars with specific traits.

Summary: Flour of millets is nutritionally better than cereals, but has a shorter shelf-life. Millets have higher levels of resistant starch, micronutrients, and balanced essential amino acids compared to cereals. The nutritional density and shelf-life of millet and cereal flours differ, and this information can be used to develop nutrient-dense pre-mixes with better keeping quality.

Navdeep Singh Plaha, Nutan Kaushik, Sumegha Awasthi, Mamta Singh, Vikender Kaur, Sapna Langyan, Ashok Kumar, Sanjay Kalia

Summary: The fatty acid profiles of 14 Linum species were analyzed by GC-MS to study their nutritional quality. The results showed that L. lewisii and L. marginale had the highest content of ALA, L. tenuifolium had the highest linoleic acid content, and L. catharticum had the highest oleic acid content. Health indices calculated based on the fatty acid composition indicated that most of the linseed species had a healthy fatty acid composition, with L. lewisii and L. bienne standing out as potential candidates for dietary or nutritional interests. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was able to effectively distinguish the lipid profiles of different Linum species.
