The combined system of wind farm (WF) and battery energy storage system (BESS) has been proven to be an effective way to cope with the inherent intermittency and unpredictability of wind power. However, the BESS may suffer from frequently cycling in the process, which adversely affects its lifespan. This paper develops a systematical procedure to schedule and operate the combined system considering the cycling limits of BESS. The scheduling helps the producer make decision with maximal expected profits under uncertainty in power market, while the real-time operation strategy assists the producer to follow the generation schedule without violating the cycling constraints of BESS. The charge/discharge cycling limits of BESS are considered in the whole process, and a control strategy applied to BESS is presented to reduce the number of charge/discharge cycles. An example case is carried out, and the simulation demonstrates the actual power generation follows the schedule accurately, and the proposed control strategy reduces the charge/discharge cycles of BESS as expected.
