Summary: In patients coinfected with HBV and HIV, HBV RNA and HBcrAg can still be detected despite viral suppression, and their levels are associated with the extent of HBsAg and HBcAg staining in liver cells. This suggests that residual transcription and translation may contribute to liver pathology even when viral replication is suppressed.

Summary: This study describes the characteristics of HBV PreS/S mutations in Vietnamese CHB-infected patients and their association with HCC. The results show that several amino acid replacements were detected in the PreS1/PreS2/S genes, and mutations such as W4P/R/Y on PreS1 and T47A/E/V/K, P120S/T, S174N, and P203R on S gene were associated with HCC.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of HBV DNA-negative, HBsAg-positive, HBeAg-negative patients based on liver histopathology. The findings showed that age, total bilirubin, cholinesterase, and platelet were significantly correlated with the presence of significant hepatic histopathology. Age was identified as an independent factor for significant hepatic histopathology.

Summary: This study aimed to compare liver histopathological findings in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with different alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normal values to explore the occurrence of liver inflammation. A total of 1474 patients were enrolled, and ALT, HBsAg, and HBeAg status were found to be relevant factors in the occurrence of significant hepatic histopathology.

Summary: In Upper Egypt, genotype D was found to be the major circulating type among chronic HBV-infected patients, with mutations in the a determinant region only detected in genotype D isolates. This could pose a potential threat to HBV diagnosis, therapy success, and vaccination programs in Upper Egypt.

Summary: This study analyzed the differences in T-lymphocyte subsets, cytokine levels, and HBV S gene sequences between HBsAg-negative and HBsAg-positive patients. The results showed that HBsAg-negative patients had superior cellular immune function compared to HBsAg-positive patients, with possible mutations and amino acid replacement sites in the HBV S region.

Summary: MDR HBV, with mutations resistant to both LAM/LdT/ETV and ADV, can be difficult to treat. The study identified a variety of MDR mutation patterns, with different responses to therapies, and found that TDF/TDF+ETV showed higher inhibitory rates on MDR HBV compared to ADV + ETV, especially for ETVr + ADVr strains. This has important clinical implications for resistance management.

Summary: This study assessed the rate of HBV virological response in HIV/HBV co-infected patients on HBV-active ART in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and analyzed factors associated with persistent HBV viraemia. The findings showed a high proportion of patients on HBV-active ART were unsuppressed, which will have an impact on global elimination goals. Better monitoring and early HBV drug-resistance testing should be implemented.

Summary: The study investigated the dynamic pattern and clinical value of HBV RNA in chronic HBV infected patients receiving first-line nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) therapy. The results demonstrated a positive correlation between HBV RNA and HBV DNA, and indicated that HBV RNA could monitor virus activity in patients whose serum HBV DNA could not be detected.

Summary: Through whole-exome sequencing, proteomic analysis, and single-cell RNA sequencing, this study revealed that HBV-infected ICC patients have decreased cell-cell junction levels and an increased epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) program. The immune landscape analysis found more CD8 T cells and Th2 cells in HBV-ICC patients. Single-cell analysis showed increased transforming growth factor beta signaling-related EMT program changes in tumor cells of HBV-ICC patients. Additionally, ICAM1(+) tumor-associated macrophages were associated with a poor prognosis and contributed to EMT in HBV-ICC patients. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms driving HBV-infected ICC.

Summary: Rafsanjan is a unique city in Iran, known for its large human-made pistachio jungle and the second largest copper mine, as well as its location on the opium trade route. Concerns about health outcomes in this city led to the initiation of the Rafsanjan Cohort Study, which revealed a concerning prevalence of non-communicable disease risk factors. Further investigations and interventions are needed to address these health issues.

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are synthetic antibiotics that decompose DNA to prevent bacterial growth and indirectly modulate immune responses by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines and affecting lymphocyte activity and cytokine expression.

Summary: The study found significantly higher serum IL-38 levels in OA patients compared to healthy controls, with the levels possibly influenced by WOMAC, VAS, and BMI indices. It suggests that IL-38 may serve as a valuable marker for OA and its expression in serum may be elevated in patients with more severe disease to modulate inflammatory responses.
