Objective: Observational studies, to date, have provided inconsistent findings on whether inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with an increased risk of stroke. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the association of IBD and its specific subtypes with risk of stroke. Design: We searched electronic databases for studies through May 13, 2015 assessing risk of stroke in patients with IBD. Cohort and case-control studies that reported incident cases of stroke in patients with IBD and a non-IBD control population were eligible. We calculated pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 8 articles (126,493 IBD patients and 4748 cases of stroke) were included in this meta-analysis. The presence of IBD revealed a trend toward a modest increase in the risk of stroke incidence (HR = 1.29; 95% CI, 1.16-1.43). After subgroup analysis, Crohn's disease showed an increased risk of stroke incidence (7 studies: HR = 1.32; 95% CI, 1.13-1.56), and a significant association was also identified in ulcerative colitis (6 studies: HR = 1.18; 95% CI, 1.06-1.31). In addition, this risk is higher in women (6 studies: HR = 1.49; 95% CI, 1.24-1.79) than in men (HR = 1.22; 95% CI, 1.12-1.32). In the overall analysis we found considerable heterogeneity. Conclusion: Our results show a positive association between IBD and the risk of stroke.

Summary: The study assessed the quality of preclinical evidence for MSCs therapy of ALS, determined the effect size of MSCs treatment, and identified clinical parameters associated with differences in MSCs effects. The results showed that MSCs transplantation was beneficial for neurobehavioral improvement in ALS animal models, with animal gender and immunosuppressive drug CSA having a close correlation with disease progression deceleration effect size.

Summary: This meta-analysis of 7 studies involving 13,305,007 participants found that individuals with BD have a significantly increased risk of both stroke incidence and mortality compared to those without BD. Further research should be conducted to determine if BD is a modifiable risk factor for stroke.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the clinical features and gait characteristics of PD patients with fatigue and develop a model to identify fatigue in the early stages of PD. The results showed that PD patients with fatigue had more severe impairment of motor symptoms and fatigue became more pronounced as the disease progressed. Combining clinical characteristics and gait cycle parameters can identify PD patients at high risk of fatigue.

EFFECT OF LENTINAN ON PROLIFERATION AND APOPTOSIS OF HUMAN ASTROCYTOMA U251 CELLS

Min Yuan, Chengyu Li, Xiang Xiao, Dengfeng Wan, Bin Xi, Xingxing Jiang, Jianzhong Zhang

Summary: Lentinan effectively inhibits proliferation and promotes apoptosis of human astrocytoma U251 cells. When the concentration exceeds 100 μg/ml, cell activity gradually decreases, with the lowest activity at a concentration of 600 μg/ml. Low concentrations of Lentinan (25, 50, and 100 μg/ml) had no significant effect on apoptosis of human astrocytoma U251 cells. However, Lentinan above 200 μg/ml significantly promoted apoptosis and showed a concentration gradient effect, with the highest apoptosis rate at 600 μg/ml.

Considerations on the concept, definition, and diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Ren-Shi Xu, Min Yuan

Summary: The concept, definition, and diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) pose some challenges, with a lack of unity and standardization in clinical practice.
