Summary: Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are at high risk of cardiovascular events, but effective management of dyslipidaemia and thrombotic factors can reduce this risk and improve walking performance. Adding ezetimibe or PCSK9 inhibitors can further decrease cardiovascular event risk, while dual antiplatelet therapy can prevent cardiovascular events.

Summary: A biomimetic joint paint was designed for repairing intractable partial-thickness cartilage defects, showing restoration of smooth cartilage surface and preservation of normal glycosaminoglycan content in rabbit and pig models. The treatment functions by prohibiting chondrocyte apoptosis, maintaining chondrocyte phenotype, and preserving glycosaminoglycan content in the defects, illustrating its effectiveness as a revolutionary therapeutics for noncurable partial-thickness cartilage defects.

Summary: The Shouldice technique has been the gold standard for inguinal hernia repair for many years, but mesh repair has shown better results in randomized trials. Despite this, there is still interest in tissue repairs, possibly due to fear of mesh-related pain. After a consensus meeting with international hernia surgeons, a clear standard for the Shouldice technique has been proposed.

Summary: This study aimed to report the clinical and microbiological findings of patients diagnosed with prosthetic joint infection (PJI) in a hospital in Italy and validate these diagnoses using the European Bone and Joint Infection Society three-level diagnostic approach. The study found that staphylococci were the most common microorganisms, with Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci being the most common likely PJI etiologies. Logistic regression analysis did not identify any independent predictors of confirmed PJI.

Summary: Hernias are common and often require surgical intervention. The use of synthetic mesh for hernia repair has a high recurrence rate. This study explores the potential of using piezoelectric materials and therapeutic ultrasound to create an electrically active hernia repair mesh for faster healing.

Summary: The European Researchers' Night is an annual event aimed at engaging the public with research, held in over 400 cities across Europe. A survey conducted across Ireland, Malta, and the UK found higher levels of university qualification among event attendees compared to the national public, indicating unequal participation based on socio-economic status. While there was mixed evidence on the representation of ethnic minorities at the events, it diverged from existing research findings and suggested potential for improved diversity in public engagement events.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the newly proposed definition of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) by the European Bone and Joint Infection Society (EBJIS), comparing it with previous definitions and assessing its accuracy in preoperative diagnosis. The results showed that the EBJIS definition was the most sensitive and accurate in ruling out infection preoperatively.

Summary: Breast cancer in older adults is becoming more common and challenging to manage due to its heterogeneity and lack of specific evidence. An expert taskforce expanded and updated guidelines with endorsement from the European Cancer Organisation, including factors like chemotherapy toxicity prediction, cultural and social considerations, and genetic screening. Age should not be the sole factor in decision-making, with careful consideration of geriatric assessments, life expectancy, and patient preferences.
