Frequency of use controls chemical leaching from drinking-water containers subject to disinfection

Microbial-, and chemical-based burden of disease associated with lack of access to safe water continues to primarily impact developing countries. Cost-effective health risk-mitigating measures, such as of solar disinfection applied to microbial-contaminated water stored in plastic bottles have been increasingly tested in developing countries adversely impacted by epidemic water-borne diseases. Public health concerns associated with chemical leaching from water packaging materials led us to investigate the magnitude and variability of antimony (Sb) and bromine (Br) leaching from reused plastic containers (polyethylene terephthalate, PET; and polycarbonate, PC) subject to UV and/or temperature-driven disinfection. The overall objective of this study was to determine the main and interactive effects of temperature, UV exposure duration, and frequency of bottle reuse on the extent of leaching of Sb and Br from plastic bottles into water. Regardless of UV exposure duration, frequency of reuse (up to 27 times) was the major factor that linearly increased Sb leaching from PET bottles at all temperatures tested (13-47 degrees C). Leached Sb concentrations (similar to 360 ng L-1) from the highly reused (27 times) PET bottles (minimal Sb leaching from PC bottles, <15 ng L-1) did not pose a serious risk to human health according to current daily Sb acceptable intake estimates. Leached Br concentrations from both PET and PC containers (up to similar to 15 mu g L-1) did not pose a consumer health risk either, however, no acceptable daily dose estimates exist for oral ingestion of organo-brominated, or other plasticizers/additives compounds if they were to be found in bottled water at much lower concentrations. Additional research on potential leaching of organic chemicals from water packaging materials is deemed necessary under relevant environmental conditions. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Validated single urinary assay designed for exposomic multi-class biomarkers of common environmental exposures

Summary: This study developed a multi-class method for quantitating biomarkers in urine and optimized the sample preparation and analysis steps. The method can quantify 50 biomarkers of exposure in urine, belonging to 7 chemical classes and 16 sub-classes. The method has been validated in formal international proficiency testing programs and has the potential for further expansion to analyze more chemicals.

Application of growth modeling to assess the impact of hospital-based phthalate exposure on preterm infant growth parameters during the neonatal intensive care unit hospitalization

Summary: In this study, the impact of NICU-based phthalate exposure on extrauterine growth trajectories was assessed using advanced growth modeling techniques and the NICU Hospital Exposures and Long-Term Health (NICU-HEALTH) study. The results showed that phthalate mixtures were associated with the timing and rate of the first growth spurt, and this relationship was modified by infant sex. These findings suggest that exposure to specific phthalates during NICU hospitalization may alter the timing and pattern of growth in a sexually dimorphic manner.

The effect of an organic food intervention treatment on biomarkers of exposure to lead and cadmium in primary school children of Cyprus: A cluster-randomized crossover trial

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of an organic food intervention in reducing urinary concentrations of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in primary school children in Cyprus. The results showed a reduction in urinary Pb levels during the 40-day intervention period. There were also significant associations between biomarkers of oxidative damage and both metal exposures.

Diurnal Nonlinear Recurrence Metrics of Skin Temperature and Their Association with Metabolic Hormones in Contrasting Climate Settings: A Randomized Cross-Over Trial

Summary: The urban overheating phenomenon in Mediterranean cities has significant implications for public health. This study analyzed skin temperature measurements in urban and mountainous settings and found that the nonlinear temporal dynamics of skin temperature were blunted in the urban setting. There were no significant associations between cortisol and leptin levels and skin temperature dynamics, but there were marginal associations between adiponectin levels and certain skin temperature descriptors. The study suggests dysregulations in skin temperature dynamics in urban environments compared to cooler mountainous environments.

A time differentiated dietary intervention effect on the biomarkers of exposure to pyrethroids and neonicotinoids pesticides

Summary: Tailoring medical models to specific individuals or risk subgroups delivered at the appropriate time is crucial in personalized medicine/prevention initiatives. The CIRCA-CHEM randomized 2x2 crossover pilot trial examined the impact of consuming fruits/vegetables within a restricted daily window on urinary biomarkers of exposure to neonicotinoids and pyrethroids pesticides, oxidative damage biomarkers, and the associated urinary metabolome. The study found a significant difference in pesticide levels between the morning and evening intervention periods, with higher levels observed in the evening. Positive associations were also found between pesticides and oxidative damage biomarkers, indicating a diurnal chrono-window of pesticide toxicity. Understanding the chrono-disrupted metabolism of food contaminants could be valuable in personalized medicine initiatives.

Chrono-modulated effects of external stressors on oxidative stress and damage in humans: A scoping review on night shift work

Summary: Oxidative stress and tissue damage are important factors in the early stages of chronic disease pathogenesis, but there is little research on the temporal dimensions of these processes in relation to environmental and occupational stressors like night shift work. This study critically reviewed human studies on the temporal dynamics of oxidative stress and the circadian clock system's activity in response to environmental/occupational stressors, specifically night shift work. The results showed that although progress has been made in understanding the biological mechanisms of oxidative stress, more research is needed to explore the temporal trajectory of these processes in response to environmental/occupational stressors.

Summary: Investigated the relationship between maternal plasma PFAS concentrations and SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels in a NYC-based pregnancy cohort. Found that all detected PFAS were negatively correlated with antibody levels, with several reaching statistical significance. Results suggest that PFAS may act as immunosuppressants during pregnancy.

Summary: As part of the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative, a human biomonitoring survey was conducted in 23 countries to produce comparable data for the EU. The survey utilized existing HBM capacity in Europe and aligned national or regional studies under the HBM4EU program. The survey included over 10,000 participants from different age groups and measured various biomarkers to assess exposure levels to different chemicals. The data obtained can be used as a reference for global comparison, evaluate the effectiveness of the European Commission's chemical strategy, and guide policy-making.

Summary: This comprehensive survey investigated the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic magnification of parabens and their metabolite 4-HB in a marine food web. Results showed that parabens were the predominant pollutants in marine organisms, with significant bioaccumulation from sediments. The estimated trophic magnification factor indicated biomagnification for MeP and trophic dilution for 4-HB. Overall, the risks for humans consuming marine organisms were found to be low.

Summary: Anaerobic and microalgae-based technologies have emerged as sustainable alternatives for municipal wastewater treatment. However, the presence of viruses in the treated wastewater is a major concern for reuse applications. This study assessed the ability of these technologies to reduce viruses during secondary wastewater treatment. The results showed that all technologies were effective in reducing the concentration of viruses, with microalgae-based treatment exhibiting the highest potential for reducing the disinfection requirements of treated wastewater.

Cation exchange resins enhance anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge: Roles in sequential recovery of hydrogen and methane

Summary: This study investigates the effect of cation exchange resin (CER) on the sequential recovery of hydrogen and methane from anaerobic digestion (AD) and the corresponding mechanisms. The results show that CER can simultaneously enhance the production of hydrogen and methane by promoting the solubilisation, hydrolysis, and acidification of organic matter. Additionally, CER facilitates effective contact between bacteria and organic particulates and reduces the energy barrier for mass transfer during methane production. The study also reveals changes in the microbial community structure and metagenomics during the AD process.

A comprehensive evaluation of the temporal and spatial fouling characteristics of RO membranes in a full-scale seawater desalination plant

Summary: The fouling of seawater reverse osmosis membranes is a persistent challenge in desalination. This study monitored the operational performance of a desalination plant for 7 years and the fouling development in different areas of membrane modules. The findings showed that operational performance declined over time and fouling mainly occurred at the feed side of the modules, with the highest microbial diversity. Keystone species like Chloroflexi and Planctomycetes played an important role in maintaining community structure and biofilm maturation. Polysaccharides, soluble microbial products, marine humic acid-like substances, and inorganic substances contributed to fouling. Overall, biofouling had a significant impact on membrane fouling after 7 years of operation.

Full-scale upgrade activated sludge to continuous-flow aerobic granular sludge: Implementing microaerobic-aerobic configuration with internal separators

Summary: This study implemented a microaerobic-aerobic configuration in a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment facility and investigated the effects on sludge characteristics, pollutant removal, microbial community, and granulation mechanisms. The results showed successful transition from flocculent-activated sludge to well-defined AGS after two months of operation. The primary pathways for pollutant removal were simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal. Moreover, the incorporation of internal separators induced shifts in the flow pattern, which promoted granulation.

Deciphering anaerobic ethanol metabolic pathways shaped by operational modes

Summary: Efficient anaerobic digestion relies on the cooperation of different microorganisms with different metabolic pathways. This study investigated the effects of different operational modes and the addition of powdered activated carbon (PAC) on ethanol metabolic pathways. The results showed that the SBR mode and the presence of CO2 facilitated ethanol metabolism towards propionate production, while the CFR mode with extended solids retention time enriched Geobacter. Adjusting operational modes and PAC addition can modulate anaerobic ethanol metabolism and enrich Geobacter.

Rare resistome rather than core resistome exhibited higher diversity and risk along the Yangtze River

Summary: This study analyzed the occurrence and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in different environmental media of the Yangtze River using metagenomics. Core resistome dominated by multidrug resistance genes was found in all samples, while rare resistome dominated by various resistance genes was more prevalent in plasmids. Specific bacteria were identified as hosts for both core and rare resistomes, with high clinical concern ARGs found in the rare resistome. Particle-associated environment provided the most ideal conditions for resistome hosts. This study provided insights into the genetic locations of ARGs and the community assembly mechanisms of ARG hosts in freshwater environments.

Uncovering interactions among ternary electron donors of organic carbon source, thiosulfate and Fe0 in mixotrophic advanced denitrification: Proof of concept from simulated to authentic secondary effluent

Summary: By synergizing organic carbon source, thiosulfate, and zero-valent iron, efficient mixotrophic denitrification of oligotrophic secondary effluent can be achieved. Thiosulfate plays a vital role in promoting TN removal efficiency, while corrosion of Fe0 releases OH- to neutralize H+ from thiosulfate-driven denitrification, creating a suitable environment for denitrification. The coordination of thiosulfate and Fe0 maintains the dominance of Thiobacillus for denitrification.
