Short communication: Identifying key parameters for modelling the impacts of livestock health conditions on greenhouse gas emissions

R. P. Kipling, A. Bannink, D. J. Bartley, I Blanco-Penedo, P. Faverdin, A- Graux, N. J. Hutchings, I Kyriazakis, M. Macleod, S. Ostergaard, T. P. Robinson, A. Vitali, B. Vosough Ahmadi, S. Ozkan

Summary: Improved animal health can reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensities in livestock systems while increasing productivity. However, modellers need to understand the pathways linking animal health to emissions and how to incorporate them into models to effectively reduce emissions. Workshops, online exchanges, and surveys were used to identify disease-related model parameters and test their application in evaluating models, which proved effective in assessing the potential of farm-scale models in characterizing livestock disease impacts on GHG emissions.

Molecular and phenotypic characterisation of fenbendazole resistance in a field-derived isolate of Ostertagia ostertagi

Summary: Research confirmed benzimidazole resistance in Ostertagia ostertagi, leading to treatment failure. Genetic sequencing showed common single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with resistance.

Integrating applied parasitological and molecular epidemiological methodologies to investigate the capacity of Haemonchus contortus to over-winter on pasture in Scotland

David J. Bartley, Leigh Andrews, Lynsey A. Melville, David McBean, Philip Skuce, Alison A. Morrison

Summary: The study used a combination of traditional applied parasitological and molecular species identification techniques to assess the capability of Haemonchus contortus infective larvae to over-winter on pasture and infect lambs in early spring. The results demonstrated that larvae were able to survive over-winter, albeit in small numbers, and potentially contaminate pastures earlier than previously considered in northern regions of the UK.

Descriptive analysis of nematode management practices and Nematodirus battus control strategies on UK sheep farms

Lynsey A. Melville, Giles Innocent, Jan Van Dijk, Sian Mitchell, David J. Bartley

Summary: The survey revealed that control of Nematodirus battus infection is challenging and 'one-size-fits-all' advice is not applicable; however, the information gathered will enable the development of effective, adaptable control strategies.

Determining the influence of socio-psychological factors on the adoption of individual 'best practice' parasite control behaviours from Scottish sheep farmers.

Corin Jack, Emily Hotchkiss, Neil D. Sargison, Luiza Toma, Catherine Milne, David J. Bartley

Summary: This study investigated Scottish sheep farmers' attitudes and behaviors towards parasite control, and used quantitative structural equation modeling to determine the factors influencing the implementation of recommended practices. The results showed that topography and experience had negative influences on multiple control practices, while social norms, worm control knowledge, AR risk perception, and positive attitudes towards veterinary services had positive influences. Factors such as social norms, suspicions of AR, and confirmation of AR had the greatest relative effects on individual parasite control practices.

Phenotypic and genotypic analysis of benzimidazole resistance in reciprocal genetic crosses of Haemonchus contortus

A. A. Morrison, U. Chaudhry, L. Andrews, L. Melville, S. R. Doyle, N. D. Sargison, D. J. Bartley

Summary: The study on benzimidazole (BZ) resistance in Haemonchus contortus through reciprocal genetic crosses revealed a potential difference in resistance phenotype depending on whether the resistant allele is paternally or maternally inherited. These findings provide new insight into the inheritance of BZ resistance in H. contortus and prompt further investigation.

Transcriptomic analyses implicate neuronal plasticity and chloride homeostasis in ivermectin resistance and response to treatment in a parasitic nematode

Roz Laing, Stephen R. Doyle, Jennifer McIntyre, Kirsty Maitland, Alison Morrison, David J. Bartley, Ray Kaplan, Umer Chaudhry, Neil Sargison, Andy Tait, James A. Cotton, Collette Britton, Eileen Devaney

Summary: Through crossbreeding and gene expression analysis, we have identified certain genes associated with ivermectin resistance and proposed a novel mechanism that allows resistant worms to survive treatment. This is crucial for understanding ivermectin resistance and response to treatment in parasitic helminths.

Summary: In this study, chitosan coated PLGA particles were used to encapsulate essential oil components, which showed potent anthelmintic activity against ovine gastrointestinal nematodes. The encapsulated particles improved the bioavailability and efficacy of the essential oil components.

Allele specific PCR for a major marker of levamisole resistance in Haemonchus contortus

Alistair Antonopoulos, Stephen R. Doyle, David J. Bartley, Alison A. Morrison, Ray Kaplan, Sue Howell, Cedric Neveu, Valentina Busin, Eileen Devaney, Roz Laing

Summary: Haemonchus contortus is a parasitic nematode that infects small ruminants and causes health issues and economic losses in the livestock industry. The treatment for this parasite primarily relies on broad-spectrum anthelmintics, but resistance has emerged. Levamisole (LEV) is an important treatment option, as resistance to LEV is less common. Genetic variation at the acr-8 locus has been implicated in LEV resistance.
