The molecular mechanism underlying cancer invasiveness and metastasis of gastric carcinoma remains elusive. Here, we reported significant decrease in microRNA (miRNA)-34a and significant increase in phosphorylated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP7) in the resected gastric carcinoma from the patients, compared with adjacent normal tissue. Moreover, strong correlation was detected among these three factors. To examine whether a causal link exists, we used two human gastric carcinoma lines, SNU-5 and HGC27, to study the molecular basis of miRNA-34a, EGFR signaling, and MMP7 activation. We found that EGF-induced EGFR phosphorylation in SNU-5 or HGC27 cells activated MMP7 and consequently cancer invasiveness. Both an inhibitor for EGFR and an inhibitor for Akt significantly inhibited the EGF-induced activation of MMP7, suggesting a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling cascade dependent pathway. Moreover, miRNA-34a levels were not affected by EGF-induced EGFR phosphorylation. However, overexpression of miRNA-34a antagonized EGF-induced MMP7 activation without affecting EGFR phosphorylation in SNU-5 or HGC27 cells. Taken together, our data suggest that miRNA-34 inhibits EGFR signaling via downstream PI3K signaling cascades to regulate MMP7 expression in gastric carcinoma. Thus, miRNA-34a, EGFR, and MMP7 appear to be promising therapeutic targets for preventing the metastasis of gastric carcinoma.

MS-GAN: multi-scale GAN with parallel class activation maps for image reconstruction

Jian Rao, Aihua Ke, Gang Liu, Yue Ming

Summary: This paper presents a more effective multi-scale generative adversarial network (MS-GAN) for image reconstruction. By utilizing improved U-Net, parallel class activation maps (P-CAMs), and spectral normalization (SN), MS-GAN is able to capture important details and achieve more realistic visual effects in image reconstruction.

Radar echo simulation of wind turbines array based on scattering center

Bo Tang, Xiaofeng Yang, Jiangong Zhang, Zhibin Zhao, Hao Chen, Gang Liu

Summary: This paper proposes a method for accurate radar echo simulation of wind turbines (WTs) array, which solves the problem of passive interference from wind farms to neighboring radar stations. The equivalent model of scattering centers of a single WT is obtained, and the scattering centers model of WTs array is established. The method is verified and compared with traditional methods, showing more consistency with practical engineering.

RMDisease V2.0: an updated database of genetic variants that affect RNA modifications with disease and trait implication

Bowen Song, Xuan Wang, Zhanmin Liang, Jiongming Ma, Daiyun Huang, Yue Wang, Joao Pedro de Magalhaes, Daniel J. Rigden, Jia Meng, Gang Liu, Kunqi Chen, Zhen Wei

Summary: Recent advances in epitranscriptomics have revealed the functional associations between RNA modifications (RMs) and multiple human diseases. This study presents an updated database, RMDisease v2.0, which identifies RM-associated genetic variants that may affect different types of RNA modifications in various organisms. These variants, including disease- and trait-associated genetic variants, may function through perturbations of epitranscriptomic markers. RMDisease v2.0 serves as a valuable resource for studying the genetic drivers of phenotypes in the epitranscriptome layer circuitry.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel and simple encryption scheme called Joseph shift encryption (JSE) that is as effective as other algorithms. It introduces the static Joseph shift encryption (S-JSE) and dynamic Joseph shift encryption (D-JSE) algorithms to enhance the effectiveness of image encryption by reducing dimension and increasing iterations. It also analyzes the effectiveness of S-JSE and the security of D-JSE.

Jiachen Qi, Weidong Yan, Gang Liu, Yuan Teng, Sizhe Gao, Shujie Yan, Jian Wang, Boyi Zhou, Bingyang Ji

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) defined by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) group in patients supported by veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) after post-cardiotomy cardiogenic shock (PCS), and to identify the risk factors for AKI >3. The results showed that the incidence of AKI >3 in patients supported by VA ECMO after PCS was 58.8%. Patients with AKI >3 required significantly longer mechanical ventilation and hospital stay. Intraoperative implantation of VA ECMO was associated with a decreased incidence of AKI >3.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that although the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALY rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The highest death and DALY rates are found in low and low-middle SDI countries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures.

Equality scale-based and sound horizon-based analysis of the Hubble tension

Zhihuan Zhou, Yuhao Mu, Gang Liu, Lixin Xu, Jianbo Lu

Summary: This study provides an interesting consistency check for the standard ΛCDM model and its extensions by analyzing the Hubble horizon and sound horizon. It shows that adding extra radiation component can reduce k(eq), while adding early dark energy tends to increase k(eq). The analysis suggests that the dark radiation scenario is more consistent in fitting the two standard rulers. Compared with the best-fit H-0 in the baseline ΛCDM model, the WZDR model has a ΔH-0 of 1.1 and the EDE model has a ΔH-0 of -2.4 when fitting with a mock k(eq) prior derived from Planck best-fit ΛCDM model.

Sheet-on-sheet ZnIn2S4@RGO-modified separators with abundant sulfur vacancies for high-performance Li-S batteries

Liping Wu, Gang Liu, Hongyuan Xu, Zhenwei Hu, Tao Mei, Jingwen Qian, Xianbao Wang

Summary: A novel sheet-on-sheet architecture with abundant sulfur vacancies (Vs-ZIS@RGO) is designed by in situ growth of flake-like ZnIn2S4 on the reduced graphene oxide surface, serving as a functional layer on the separators for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries. The sheet-on-sheet structure enables rapid ionic/electronic transfer and shortened diffusion pathways for lithium-ions, while the introduction of sulfur vacancies enhances chemical affinity and accelerates reaction kinetics. The modified separators exhibit excellent initial discharge capacity and long cycle stability, providing new insights for designing durable and efficient LSBs.
