Epidemiologic findings concerning the association between tea consumption and leukemia risk yielded mixed results. We aimed to investigate the association by performing a meta-analysis of all available studies. One cohort studies and six case-control studies with 1,019 cases were identified using PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE. We computed summary relative risks (RRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) using random effect model applied to the relative risk associated with ever, moderate, or highest drinkers vs. non/lowest drinkers. Subgroup analyses were performed based on country (China and USA). Compared with non/lowest drinkers, the combined RR for ever drinkers was 0.76 (95 % CI = 0.65-0.89). In subgroup analyses, significant inverse associations were found for both China and USA studies. The summary RR was 0.57 (95 % CI = 0.41-0.78) for highest drinkers. Same results were only found in China studies. No significant associations were found for moderate drinkers in overall analysis or in subgroup analyses. There was some evidence of publication bias. In conclusion, this meta-analysis suggests a significant inverse association of high tea consumption and leukemia risk. Results should be interpreted cautiously given the potential publication bias.

MeCP2 prevents age-associated cognitive decline via restoring synaptic plasticity in a senescence-accelerated mouse model

Jin-Lan Huang, Fan Zhang, Min Su, Jiaxin Li, Wen Yi, Li-Xiang Hou, Si-Man Yang, Jin-Yuan Liu, Hao-An Zhang, Tengfei Ma, Deng-Pan Wu

Summary: The study found that MeCP2 plays a crucial role in age-related cognitive decline by regulating synaptic plasticity. MeCP2's modulation of synaptic plasticity may be associated with the CREB1 pathway, indicating it as a promising target for the treatment of age-related cognitive decline in neurodegenerative diseases.

Dexmedetomidine attenuates motor deficits via restoring the function of neurons in the nigrostriatal circuit in Parkinson's disease model mice

Li Zhou, Qian Xie, Quanyun Zhang, Mengxi Hu, Tengfei Ma, Hong Xie

Summary: Dexmedetomidine attenuates motor deficits and protects dopaminergic neurons in a dose-dependent manner in a PD mouse model. It acts on nigrostriatal circuit neurons, including activating dopaminergic neurons and reducing the excitabilities of striatal neurons via dopamine D2 receptors, improving motor dysfunction.

Sheep tail fat inhibits the proliferation of non-small-cell lung cancer cells in vitro and in vivo

Changzhi Xu, Lanlan Zhang, Huimin He, Xiaoyi Liu, Xinxin Pei, Tengfei Ma, Bingbing Ma, Wenchu Lin, Buchang Zhang

Summary: Research shows that sheep tail fat (STF), rich in the odd-chain saturated fatty acid (OCSFA) heptadecanoic acid (C17:0), has anti-non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) activity. STF inhibits NSCLC cell proliferation and migration by promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and subsequent cell death, and suppresses cell growth by downregulating the Akt/S6K signaling pathway. Animal studies demonstrate that STF reduces tumor growth and weight in nude mice with A549 xenografts. Therefore, dietary intake of C17:0-rich STF may be a potential adjuvant therapy for NSCLC.

Summary: An increasing number of studies have shown that alcohol vapor chambers are effective in modeling physical signs of alcohol use disorders. However, in China, there are few studies that have built and modified their own vapor chambers. In this study, researchers designed and established an alcohol vapor chamber system for small animals. They demonstrated how to control and monitor alcohol concentration in the system and tested the system by evaluating blood alcohol concentration and neuron injury in mice. The study also found that alcohol exposure-induced behaviors were associated with changes in NMDAR response.

tRF-20-S998LO9D inhibits endometrial carcinoma by upregulating SESN2

Tianye Qian, Xinnian Yu, Andi Xu, Huixin Li, Wei Chen, Shanliang Zhong

Summary: This study aims to investigate the roles of transfer RNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) in endometrial carcinoma (EC). The tsRNA profiles for EC from TCGA were analyzed and the functions and mechanisms of tsRNA were explored through in vitro experiments. The results identified 173 dysregulated tsRNAs. After validation in EC tissues and serumal exosome samples, a downregulated tsRNA, tRF-20-S998LO9D, was observed. Exosomal tRF-20-S998LO9D inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion, and promoted apoptosis of EC cells, and its knockdown further confirmed its effects. Further analysis showed that tRF-20-S998LO9D upregulated SESN2 in protein levels. In conclusion, tRF-20-S998LO9D inhibits EC cells by upregulating SESN2.

Chronic alcohol drinking persistently suppresses thalamostriatal excitation of cholinergic neurons to impair cognitive flexibility

Tengfei Ma, Zhenbo Huang, Xueyi Xie, Yifeng Cheng, Xiaowen Zhuang, Matthew J. Childs, Himanshu Gangal, Xuehua Wang, Laura N. Smith, Rachel J. Smith, Yubin Zhou, Jun Wang

Summary: Exposure to chronic alcohol consumption impairs cognitive flexibility in individuals. This impairment is linked to altered activity of striatal cholinergic interneurons (CINs), which play a role in regulating glutamatergic transmission in medium spiny neurons (MSNs). Chronic alcohol drinking reduces thalamic excitation of CINs, compromising their ability to regulate glutamatergic transmission in MSNs, leading to impaired cognitive flexibility.
