Evidence-to-decision frameworks: a review and analysis to inform decision-making for environmental health interventions

Susan L. Norris, Max T. Aung, Nicholas Chartres, Tracey J. Woodruff

Summary: This study identified 18 EtD frameworks, with most focusing on clinical medicine or public health interventions. The frameworks considered harms and benefits of interventions, along with other factors, providing a useful starting point for developing recommendations for environmental health interventions.

In Silico Structure Predictions for Non-targeted Analysis: From Physicochemical Properties to Molecular Structures

Dimitri Abrahamsson, Adi Siddharth, Thomas M. Young, Marina Sirota, June-Soo Park, Jonathan W. Martin, Tracey J. Woodruff

Summary: This study aims to develop a computational pipeline that integrates HRMS data and physicochemical properties to propose molecular structures for detected chemical features. The use of physicochemical fingerprints can assist in compound identification and increase the number of identified compounds.

Associations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and their mixture with oxidative stress biomarkers during pregnancy

Kaitlin R. Taibl, Susan Schantz, Max T. Aung, Amy Padula, Sarah Geiger, Sabrina Smith, June-Soo Park, Ginger L. Milne, Joshua F. Robinson, Tracey J. Woodruff, Rachel Morello-Frosch, Stephanie M. Eick

Summary: This study is the first to investigate the relationship between PFAS exposure and biomarkers of oxidative stress during human pregnancy. The researchers found that PFOS was associated with elevated levels of oxidative stress, which is consistent with prior work in animal models and cell lines. Further research is needed to understand how prenatal PFAS exposure and maternal oxidative stress may affect fetal development.

Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Implementation: How the Amended Law Has Failed to Protect Vulnerable Populations from Toxic Chemicals in the United States

Swati D. G. Rayasam, Patricia D. Koman, Daniel A. Axelrad, Tracey J. Woodruff, Nicholas Chartres

Summary: Exposures to industrial chemicals can increase the risk of adverse health effects, but the US EPA's risk evaluations have underestimated these risks. The evaluations did not consider various factors such as conditions of use, cumulative risk, and susceptible subpopulations. Additionally, there were flaws in the data analysis and evaluation methods used. Improvements are needed to ensure fair and socially just protection of public health.

Summary: This study identified differences in chemical exposures between pregnant women giving birth in two different types of hospitals in San Francisco, likely due to the social conditions faced by the populations served.
