The effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on digestion and mortality in the volcano rabbit (Romerolagus diazi)

An experiment was conducted to evaluate whether supplementation with a probiotic could enhance digestion and reduce mortality in the volcano rabbit in captivity. Two enclosures at Chapultepec Zoo, Mexico (114 individuals) were used in a crossover design (two periods of 60 days) with the following treatments: control group and supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (2x10(8) CFU/exhibit/day). Supplementation with the probiotic negatively affected (P<0.01) the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and energy. Mortality increased (P<0.04) following supplementation with the probiotic (4.26% vs. 8.89%), primarily in the juvenile rabbits. The results indicate that yeast supplementation in the volcano rabbit negatively affects digestion and mortality in captivity.

Summary: The effects of supplemental Indian polyherbal phytogenic sources (IndPPs) on the growth performance, blood chemistry, blood cells, and antibody amounts of dairy calves were investigated. The results showed that IndPPs supplementation reduced blood glucose levels and increased the concentrations of protein, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, and antibodies in the blood serum. Furthermore, IndPPs supplementation also increased the concentrations of hematocrit, hemoglobin, and erythrocytes in the blood cells of calves.

Summary: The by-products of Hibiscus sabdariffa rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins can improve the quality of fatty acids in meat and milk, while reducing oxidative effects on dairy and meat products. The antioxidants in Hibiscus sabdariffa may also have positive effects on consumers' health by increasing fatty acid quality, antioxidant activity, and shelf-life stability. Further studies are needed to explore the potential benefits of including Hibiscus sabdariffa by-products and calyxes in ruminant nutrition.

Summary: Choline chloride, commonly used in pet food, can make food processing difficult due to its hygroscopic nature. As an alternative, herbal additives rich in phosphatidylcholine have been used in livestock farms. These herbal additives not only provide choline but also possess nutraceutical properties that benefit the animal's health. This study compared the effects of choline chloride and a polyherbal additive in dog diets. While both sources of choline had similar effects on animal response, the polyherbal additive showed potential in preventing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cancer, inflammation, immune response, and influencing behavior and cognitive processes in dogs.

Summary: This study investigated the applicability of an electronic nose in describing the differentiation of volatile organic compounds in fresh Mexican cheese made from milk of different dairy cattle breeds. The results showed that the electronic nose was able to distinguish cheese made from different breeds. Additionally, a complementary method using GC-MS was used to identify important carboxylic acid compounds in the cheese.

Summary: This experiment evaluated the effects of herbal vitamin C at different levels on tilapia growth, potential DNA damage, and the metabolomic profile of water effluent. The results showed that the inclusion of herbal vitamin C improved fish weight and growth, while reducing DNA damage. Metabolomic analysis revealed significant changes in the water metabolomic profile induced by herbal vitamin C.

Summary: Early gestation is a critical period for successful pregnancy, and choline plays a key role in fetal development. This study aims to investigate the effects of choline supplementation during early gestation using an herbal mixture on offspring development. The results showed that supplementation with biocholine did not affect birth and weaning weight or milk yield and quality. However, it did reduce placental membrane development while increasing newborn weight during lambing.
