A procedure has been developed for the cloud point extraction (CPE) of uranium (VI) using H2DEH[MDP] (P,P-di(2-ethylhexyl) methanediphosphonic acid) with inductively coupled plasma coupled to mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The method is based on the modification of the cloud point temperature using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and Kt. Optimal conditions of extraction were found using a cross-optimization of every parameter (non-ionic and ionic surfactant concentrations, chelating agent concentration, pH and the extraction, and phase separation temperatures). Furthermore, the figures of merit of the methodology were assessed (limit of detection, limit of quantification, recovery, sensibility, and linear range) and are reported. Quantitative extraction (99 +/- 0.5%) was obtained in drinking water samples over a wide range of uranium concentrations. The approach was also validated using drinking (SCP EP-L-3 and SCP EP-H-3), and wastewater (SCP EU-L-3) certified materials. Interferences from most critical anions and cations were evaluated to determine the reliability of the method. The proposed method showed robustness since its performance is maintained over a wide range of pH and metal ion concentrations. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Guillaume Blanchet-Chouinard, Dominic Lariviere

Summary: This study introduces a novel cloud point extraction method for separating and enriching polonium-210 for alpha-spectrometric quantification. By optimizing the extractive behavior of diglycolamide-based ligands in various acidic conditions, a suitable CPE system for determining polonium-210 at ultra-trace levels compatible with alpha-spectrometry was developed. The methodology was robustly demonstrated by determining polonium ions concentration in various environmental and biological samples and solid certified reference materials.

Co-Extraction of Uranium and Mercury Using Ion Exchange from Cemented Radioactive Waste Sulfuric Leachate in Iodide Media

Maxime Courchesne, Raoul-Marie Couture, Justine Basque, Nicolas Reynier, Dominic Lariviere

Summary: The solubilization of valuable elements such as uranium, mercury, and cesium from cemented radioactive waste (CRW) has been investigated using H2SO4/KI. However, separation of these elements is necessary for their recycling. This study examined the extraction of uranium and mercury from surrogate cemented radioactive waste (SCRW) using chelating resin Lewatit TP260 in the presence of iodide. The Lewatit TP260 demonstrated high affinity for uranium, but the presence of iodide increased competition between adsorbed mercury and iodide-mercury complexes. The reusability of the resin was also tested and it was found that the capacity for uranium and mercury extraction decreased with the number of cycles due to the presence of trivalent cation.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a major cause of senile dementia and is characterized by the aggregation of neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques in the brain. The A beta 1-42 peptide is considered the primary cause of neurotoxicity due to its insolubility and subsequent aggregation. A beta 1-42 and A beta 1-40 have been identified as relevant biomarkers for AD diagnosis, and SurfaceAssisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (SALDI-MS) was used to monitor the A beta 1-42/A beta 1-40 ratio without prior sample treatment.
