Summary: Bacterial infections of yolk sacs in chicks can lead to high mortality rates and economic losses in poultry production. This study aimed to characterize enterococci isolated from yolk sac infections in broiler chickens from Poland and the Netherlands, finding important virulence factors and genetic relatedness among isolates.

Summary: Enterococcus isolated from eggshells shows significant antimicrobial resistance. The use of antimicrobials in feed leads to multidrug resistance in the isolated Enterococcus. This may be due to environmental factors.

Summary: We describe the first known case of E. hirae infective endocarditis involving the mitral valve alone and the seventh case of E. hirae IE worldwide. The patient underwent mitral valve replacement surgery due to worsening mitral valve regurgitation caused by E. hirae infection.

Summary: In this study, 95 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from stool samples in Busan, South Korea showed diverse antibiotic resistance patterns and distribution of enterotoxin genes. Molecular typing using MALDI-TOF MS and RAPD revealed different clonal lineages among the S. aureus strains.

Summary: In this study, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) with in-house databases was used to distinguish between Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus lactis. Specific mass peaks were identified for each species, providing a highly accurate and high-throughput alternative to 16S rRNA sequencing.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, virulence characters, and molecular typing of Enterococcus faecalis strains isolated from seafood samples. The results showed that seafood samples were important reservoirs of virulent and resistant E. faecalis strains, and different strains may have diverse sources of contamination.

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of MALDI-TOF MS, VITEK 2, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing in identifying Enterococcus species. The results showed that MALDI-TOF MS correctly identified all isolates at the species level except for one, while VITEK 2 misidentified ten isolates. However, the phylogenetic trees constructed from both methods showed similar positions for all isolates. The study clearly demonstrated that MALDI-TOF MS is a reliable and rapid tool for identifying Enterococcus species with greater discriminatory power than VITEK 2.

Summary: This study reveals a strong correlation between mass spectra pattern and virulence phenotype among Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) for the first time. Machine learning-based classifiers were established and achieved an accuracy of over 90%. Overall, this study paves the way for rapid detection of virulent SS2 and provides new ideas for genotype-dependent detection of specific pathogens.

Summary: This study calculated the antibiotic resistance profiles of Enterococcus faecium, E. faecalis, and E. durans isolated from traditional sheep and goat cheeses in a border area of Slovakia with Hungary. E. faecalis showed higher resistance compared to E. durans and E. faecium, with high resistance to rifampicin and vancomycin. E. durans and E. faecium also exhibited resistance, with a high percentage of multidrug-resistant strains.

Summary: Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a simple, fast, and specific method used for bacterial identification, and has also been shown to be useful for identifying certain parasites and arthropod vectors. Fast, simple, and reliable methods for identifying arthropod vectors are crucial for controlling diseases transmitted by these vectors.

Summary: Aeromonas spp. is an opportunistic bacterium that can cause infections in animals and humans. This study investigated the prevalence, virulence profile, and antimicrobial resistance of Aeromonas spp. in ready-to-eat foods. The results showed that temaki, a type of sushi, is a carrier of potentially pathogenic Aeromonas spp. and should be avoided by certain vulnerable populations. Constant monitoring of these microorganisms is necessary due to the presence of antimicrobial-resistant strains.

Summary: This study investigates the antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and resistance genes of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolated from raw goat's and sheep's milk and cheese. The results show that E. faecalis is the dominant species, with high levels of antimicrobial resistance and presence of virulence genes in some strains.

Summary: Managing the transmission of antimicrobial resistance requires reliable methods for tracking outbreaks. MALDI-TOF MS was compared with orthogonal approaches for strain typing, including WGS and FTIR, for Acinetobacter baumannii isolates associated with a healthcare-associated infection event. Reliable molecular typing methods can help to trace transmission routes and manage outbreaks.
