Summary: Zn-doped TiO2 thin films with different weight percentages (0, 3, 7% wt.) were synthesized using the Sol-Gel method and deposited on glass substrates by the spin-coating process, followed by heat treatment at 500 ? for 90 min. The films were characterized using XRD, SEM, UV-vis transmittance spectroscopy, and m-lines spectroscopy. The results showed that increasing the zinc concentration inhibited crystal growth and led to significant microstructure changes in the TiO2 films. The films exhibited high transmittance and an optical band gap of approximately 3.6-3.51 eV. M-lines spectroscopy confirmed that the Zn: TiO2 planar waveguides supported single confined guided modes for both TE and TM polarizations. MLS measurements demonstrated that zinc doping increased the refractive index of the TiO2 thin films and enhanced their waveguiding properties, while reducing the birefringence with increasing concentrations up to 7 wt%.

Summary: This paper examines the influence of B2O3 on the structure, properties, and antibacterial abilities of sol-gel-derived TiO2/TeO2/B2O3 powders. The presence of B2O3 affects the decomposition of Ti butoxide, resulting in the formation of composite materials containing amorphous and crystalline phases. The presence of B2O3 also leads to a red shift in UV-Vis spectra and changes in antibacterial activity.

Summary: In this paper, the synthesis and characterization of pure and TM (Mn, Cr) doped BiFeO3 nanoparticles using the sol-gel technique were reported. The nanoparticle structure presented a rhombohedral distorted perovskite structure with R3c space group, along with a minor phase of Bi2Fe4O9. TM doping resulted in a decrease in lattice parameters and particle size. The bandgap was found to decrease with TM doping, while the dielectric constant and ac conductivity increased.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of fumed silica modification and calcination temperature on the physicochemical properties and activity of photocatalysts under UV-VIS and VIS light. The materials were synthesized using titanium tetraisopropoxide hydrolysis and subsequent calcination. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the nanomaterials. It was found that SiO2 modification inhibited phase transformation and crystal growth during calcination. The photocatalytic activity was enhanced by SiO2 addition and calcination, with the highest activity observed for the SiO2(11.1%)/TiO2_600 photocatalyst.

Summary: Although humic substances (HSs) are valuable in the environment, they can be nuisances for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study evaluated analytical methods for determining the structure, properties, and utilization of HSs from WWTPs. UV-Vis spectroscopy was found to be a cost-effective method for preliminary characterization, while X-EDS and FTIR were recommended for in-depth analysis due to their ability to detect heavy metals and biogenic elements. Certain absorbance coefficients and fluorescence capacities were identified as useful indicators.

Summary: Currently, the ISO 3632 technical standard is used to assess the quality of saffron, but this study proposes a new multi-analytical approach. The results showed that the commercial grading based on the ISO 3632 method did not always match the observations made with other techniques. Additionally, two new techniques, SEM-EDX and ICP-OES, were found to be effective in determining elemental composition and metal content, which are important parameters in assessing spice quality.

Summary: ZnO films with varying thicknesses were deposited for UV photodetection. The photoconductivity parameters of the photodetector were studied for UV radiation with a 365 nm wavelength. The deposited ZnO films showed poly-crystallinity with rough surfaces and oxygen-related defects, which enhanced UV photosensitivity. The photoconducting mechanism was studied using statistical interpretation of defects observed from photoluminescence spectra deconvolution. The 221 nm thick ZnO film exhibited improved photoconducting parameters due to increased defect density.

Summary: The recycling of waste mandarin peels into biochar (MRBC) has been used as a high performance and cost-effective adsorbent for treating polluted wastewater effluents. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to analyze the adsorption competency of MRBC on two dyes, methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF), either in individual solutions or binary combinations. The results showed that MRBC was capable of effectively removing a high percentage of both dyes. However, the adsorption capacity decreased when the dyes were combined. The cost estimation of MRBC production and wastewater treatment indicated that both were relatively low.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is commonly used for studying glassy materials in cultural heritage, but it is more difficult to interpret the spectra and apply the technique with portable instruments. In contrast, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) can be used in archaeometric investigations as it is portable and non-invasive. However, there is limited application of this technique to historical glasses. This exploratory work demonstrates the potential of DRIFTS, in combination with portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) and EDS microanalyses, for studying the composition and alteration of glass samples in cultural heritage.
