Objective: Genetic variants robustly associated with coronary artery disease were reported in the vicinity of the interleukin (IL)-5 locus, and animal studies suggested a protective role for IL-5 in atherosclerosis. Therefore, we set this work to explore IL-5 as a plasma biomarker for early subclinical atherosclerosis, as determined by measures of baseline severity and change over time of carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). Methods: We used biobank and databases of IMPROVE, a large European prospective cohort study of high-risk individuals (n = 3534) free of clinically overt cardiovascular disease at enrollment, in whom composite and segment-specific measures of cIMT were recorded at baseline and after 15 and 30 months. IL-5 was measured with an immunoassay in plasma samples taken at baseline. Results: IL-5 levels were lower in women than in men, lower in the South than in North of Europe, and showed positive correlations with most established risk factors. IL-5 showed significant inverse relationships with cIMT change over time in the common carotid segment in women, but no significant relationships to baseline cIMT in either men or women. Conclusions: Our results suggest that IL-5 may be part of protective mechanisms operating in early atherosclerosis, at least in women. However, the relationships are weak and whereas IL-5 has been proposed as a potential molecular target to treat allergies, it is difficult to envisage such a scenario in coronary artery disease. Schnabel

Summary: The study aims to find reliable circulating predictors for incident atrial fibrillation (AF) using classical regressions and machine learning techniques. Fourteen routinely available biomarkers reflecting different pathophysiological pathways were examined in relation to incident AF. NT-proBNP was identified as the strongest blood-based predictor of incident AF.

PCI or CABG for left main coronary artery disease: the SWEDEHEART registry

Jonas Persson, Jacinth Yan, Oskar Angeras, Dimitrios Venetsanos, Anders Jeppsson, Iwar Sjogren, Rikard Linder, David Erlinge, Torbjorn Ivert, Elmir Omerovic

Summary: This observational study aimed to analyze outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease. The study found that CABG was associated with lower mortality and fewer major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) compared to PCI in LMCA disease patients.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of angina pectoris symptoms and investigate their relationship with coronary atherosclerosis in a middle-aged general population. The results showed that angina symptoms were common among the general population of Sweden, but were not strongly associated with obstructive coronary atherosclerosis. Sociodemographic and psychological factors were found to be highly associated with angina symptoms, regardless of the degree of coronary atherosclerosis.

Association between snus use and lipid status in Swedish men

Marja Lisa Byhamre, Mats Eliasson, Stefan Soederberg, Patrik Wennberg, Viktor Oskarsson

Summary: Snus, a common tobacco product in Sweden, has been found to be associated with higher levels of HDL cholesterol and triglycerides compared to non-tobacco use, and higher levels of HDL cholesterol and lower levels of triglycerides compared to cigarette smoking. However, there was no association between snus use and non-HDL cholesterol levels. Further studies are needed to validate these findings.

Head-to-head comparison of four COVID-19 vaccines on platelet activation, coagulation and inflammation. The TREASURE study

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of four COVID-19 vaccines on platelet activation, coagulation, and inflammation. It found that vaccination did not induce platelet activation and microvesicle release. Although there were minor changes in clotting activation and endothelial function, these could potentially explain the rare venous thromboembolic complications of COVID-19 vaccination at a population level.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared levels of CMD in patients with TTS and patients with INOCA, and investigated the associations between CMD and clinical parameters, left ventricular function, and coronary atherosclerosis in TTS. It was found that CMD is common in TTS patients, more severe in the apical phenotype of the syndrome, and unrelated to coronary atherosclerosis.

Summary: This study assessed the dietary nutrient intake in patients with r-axSpA and compared it to persons without r-axSpA. The results showed that the patients had impaired dietary intake, particularly in nutrients with anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, it is suggested to incorporate nutrition screening into the management of r-axSpA patients.

Summary: LVH is more common in individuals with hypertension, African ancestry, and/or low education level. These individuals are usually older, more likely to have hypertension, diabetes, known cardiovascular disease, and elevated levels of cholesterol and creatinine. Creole ethnicity, low education level, hypertension, known CVD, and elevated creatinine are associated with LVH. Individuals with untreated or uncontrolled hypertension are at a higher risk for LVH than those with well-controlled hypertension or normotension.
