Surface runoff water is an important non-point source of fecal pollution to downstream water; however, there is a lack of systematic studies on the microbial quality of surface runoff water from watersheds with mixed land uses. In this study water samples from 12 surface runoff holding water bodies (SRW), which collected runoff from various patterns of land use within the St. Lucie watershed along the southeastern coastline of Florida, were collected monthly for 22 months. The concentration of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and frequency of detection of Salmonella and host specific markers (HF183, CF128, CF193, and HS-esp) were determined, and their associations with land use, rainfall, and water physico-chemical parameters were investigated. Higher FIB concentrations were observed from urban land and cattle ranch sites. Within the same primary land use pattern, different sub-patterns did not have the same level of FIB: golf communities contributed less to fecal pollution than residential areas, and plant nursery sites contained relative higher FIB concentrations than other agricultural sites. Salmonella, CF128, and CF193 markers were more frequently detected from the cattle ranch sites. In contrast the frequency of detecting human specific markers (HF183 and HS-esp) was much higher in residential sites. Rainfall positively affected the concentration of FIB and occurrence of Salmonella, possibly by providing more inputs or mobilizing the sources from sediments. Water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and nutrient levels were positively correlated with FIB concentrations and occurrence in SRW, possibly by promoting their growth and survival. This study indicated the need for site specific mitigation strategies to improve SRW and downstream water quality. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Colorimetric Biosensor Based on Magnetic Enzyme and Gold Nanorods for Visual Detection of Fish Freshness

Xia Xu, Xiaotian Wu, Shunqian Zhuang, Yucong Zhang, Yuting Ding, Xuxia Zhou

Summary: In this study, magnetic graphene oxide was used to immobilize diamine oxidase for the development of a colorimetric biosensor to detect histamine in fish. The biosensor showed a strong response to histamine and had negligible interference from other compounds. The etching induced multicolor change of the gold nanorods indicated the presence of varying levels of histamine in the fish, which was consistent with the overall change in the content of total volatile basic nitrogen. This colorimetric biosensor has great potential in evaluating the freshness of red-fleshed fish high in histamine.

Zero-DD: Zero-sample defect detection for industrial products

Haigang Zhang, Ronghui Pan, Fengjun Chang, Liming He, Zhongming Dong, Jinfeng Yang

Summary: In current industrial production, defective products have become a bottleneck for enterprises to improve product quality. Artificial detection is inferior to machine vision based detection in terms of speed, accuracy, and stability. However, data-driven based supervised recognition algorithms often fail in the presence of unknown defects. This paper proposes a detection model, called Zero-DD, for surface defects of industrial products with zero samples, which achieves high-precision detection by being sensitive to unknown defects.

A Novel Ionospheric Disturbance Index to Evaluate the Global Effect on BeiDou Navigation Satellite System Signal Caused by the Moderate Geomagnetic Storm on May 12, 2021

Liming He, Cong Guo, Quanyou Yue, Shixuan Zhang, Zenghui Qin, Junfei Zhang

Summary: In this paper, a new method is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the quality of carrier phase observation signals of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) during weak and moderate geomagnetic storms. The newly defined PAS (Percentage of Affected Satellites) index shows significant anomaly changes during moderate geomagnetic storms and has good correlations with the geomagnetic storm Kp index and Dst index. The proposed PAS index has a good indication for both BDS2 and BDS3 satellites and can be validated by calculating the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) positioning error.

Why plasma-activated water treatment reduced the malonaldehyde content in muscle foods

Zhigang Ke, Yiwen Bai, Yuqing Yi, Yicheng Ding, Wenjie Wang, Shulai Liu, Xuxia Zhou, Yuting Ding

Summary: The present study investigates the phenomenon of reduced malonaldehyde (MDA) content in muscle foods after plasma-activated water (PAW) treatment. The study determines the main reactive components in PAW and analyzes the changes in fatty acid composition in tuna muscle after PAW treatment. The results suggest that the reduction in MDA content is not due to the inhibition of lipid oxidation, but rather a reaction between nitrite in PAW and MDA.

Investigation of Histamine Removal by Electrodialysis from the Fermented Fish Sauce and Its Effects on the Flavor

Yicheng Ding, Mengting Qiu, Xiaoling Tang, Renchao Zheng, Xuxia Zhou

Summary: This study used electrodialysis (ED) to control the histamine in fish sauce and investigated the effects of input current, pH, and flow velocity. A statistical model was derived using a Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology, and it identified the optimal operating conditions as 5.1 A input current, pH 3.8, and 40 L·h(-1) flow velocity. Under these conditions, the histamine removal rate reached 53.41% and the histamine content met the allowable limit in fish sauce, while the loss rate of amino nitrogen was only 15.46%. Additionally, the changes in amino acids and volatile compounds differed during ED. The study's findings have positive implications for promoting the safety of aquatic products.

Summary: Spaceborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques are important for landslide detection and monitoring, but they have limitations in detecting high and steep slope landslides. This study proposes sensitivity indices and conducts experimental and statistical analysis to evaluate the feasibility of time-series InSAR monitoring for steep slopes. The results show that the defined indices can quantitatively evaluate the feasibility of InSAR observations with GNSS data and qualitatively evaluate the feasibility of InSAR monitoring without GNSS data. The study demonstrates the generalizability and wide applicability of these indices for landslide monitoring.
