Charge transfer or biradicaloid character: assessing TD-DFT and SAC-CI for squarylium dye derivatives

Keeping in view to suggest one more class of molecules in order to make a choice and assessment of exchange-correlation (XC) functionals, symmetrical squarylium dye (SQ) derivatives have been considered and Le Bahers's diagnostic indexes have been applied to study the electronic transition character of these molecular systems through TD-DFT and SAC-CI methods. Unlike calculated absorption using SAC-CI, the TD-DFT results do not match with experimental absorption data. However, the diagnostic indexes obtained with TD-DFT and SAC-CI are apparently similar for all methods. This indicates that care should be taken while choosing XC functionals and assessing the nature of electronic transitions of a specific class of molecules. The centroids of charges associated with the density increase and depletion regions are localized on the central C4 ring and carbonyl groups and with a small extension up to side aromatic substitution of the SQ dye derivative. Hence, the electronic transition occurring in this class of molecules is confined mainly within the central part of molecule. This is in contrast to donor-acceptor-donor type structure in which the charge depletion region is expected at side aromatic substitution of the molecule. The small values of calculated transferred charge (q(CT)) upon excitation lend support to the theory that the electronic transition in this class of molecules is not CT excitation. This is in agreement with our earlier finding that biradicaloid character and orbital interactions play a key role in their NIR absorption. Hence, highly correlated, single reference and a multideterminant SAC-CI method is able to explain the nature of electronic excitations in these molecules rather than TD-DFT with various types of XC functionals.

Nonlinear optical properties of benzanthrone derivatives with N'-methylpiperazin-1-yl and N'-phenylpiperazin-1-yl substituents: Experimental and quantum chemical study

Summary: This study focuses on the nonlinear optical properties of benzanthrone derivatives and reveals that the methyl substituted dye exhibits the highest nonlinear absorption coefficient, nonlinear refractive index, and second-order hyperpolarizability at a 532 nm laser wavelength. The results demonstrate that these samples are well-suited for optical limiting and all-optical switching applications.

Influence of nitro group on solvatochromism, nonlinear optical properties of 3-morpholinobenzanthrone: Experimental and theoretical study

Summary: The synthesis and characterization of 3-morpholino-9-nitrobenzanthrone (NMB) dye was reported. The molecular structure of the synthesized dye was analyzed using FT-IR, 1H NMR, and X-ray crystallography. The photophysical properties of the push-pull benzanthrone dye (NMB) were examined, revealing a large Stokes shift and significant two-photon absorption activity. The dye samples showed promising potential for optical limiter devices due to the enhanced charge transfer from the nitro substituents at the active site.

Summary: In this study, the highly regioselective nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) of polychlorinated pyrimidines promoted by Cu(II)/PTABS is reported, aided by DFT predictions of bond dissociation energies. The unique reactivity of Cu(II)-PTABS is attributed to its coordination/activation mechanism, with further insights into the catalytic species provided.

Phenothiazine-Based Cu(II)-Selective Fluorescent Sensor: GHK-Cu Sensing Applications

Summary: Sensing important metals in different environments is vital, and the use of fluorescent sensors in metal sensing is a widely applied method. This study introduces a phenothiazine-based fluorescent sensor for Cu(II) ions, which shows high selectivity compared to other transition metal salts. The Lewis acidity of the Cu(II) salt and a 1:1 ratio were found to enhance the sensing response in MeOH solvent.

Summary: Two sets of anilinosquaraine dye derivatives were computationally analysed, revealing different crystal structures and intermolecular charge transfer effects on the panchromaticity of the materials. Insights into intra-stack and inter-stack interactions based on crystal packing effects were provided, supporting experimentalists in shaping applications of squaraine derivative materials.

Recasting Ni-foam into NiF2 nanorod arrays via a hydrothermal process for hydrogen evolution reaction application

Summary: A promising electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been prepared by growing NiF2 nanorod arrays on a 3D nickel foam through a reduction process. The NiF2@Ni nanorod arrays demonstrate potential for stable HER application. NiF2 effectively reduces the overpotential of the hydrogen evolution reaction through a cooperative effect between the p-orbitals of fluorine and the d-orbitals of nickel.

Summary: This study presents a metal-free method for synthesizing novel sulfenylated 2-aminothiazole and imidazothiazole derivatives at room temperature using an in situ-generated electrophilic thiolating agent. The method allows for mild and selective insertion of C-S bond functionalization with good yield. The mechanism was elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, highlighting the role of the solvent in the reaction mechanism.
