Summary: At diluted monomer concentration, radical polymerization of a tailored bi-functional monomer, containing methacrylate and vinyl ether moieties, achieves similar consumption rates for the two different moieties. The vinyl ether content in the backbone can be regulated by adjusting the monomer concentration. The resulting alternating copolymer exhibits new properties different from poly(HEMA) but similar to poly(EGVE), including good water solubility and a low glass transition temperature.

Summary: Two isomeric hydroxyphenylmaleimide (HPMI) monomers were synthesized and copolymerized with styrene to form two near-perfect alternating copolymers. Characterization using various techniques revealed differences in hydrogen bonding interactions between oHPMI and PVP compared to pHPMI, leading to weaker interactions between oHPMI and PVP.

Summary: Citronellol-derived methacrylate polymers with different interconnecting groups were synthesized to prepare bio-based bactericidal polymers. The bactericidal activity of PCHM-X polymers is influenced by the functional groups, which determine the interaction with bacterial membranes and disrupt their integrity. Among the PCHM-X polymers, PCHM-SO with a sulfoxide group shows the highest bactericidal activity due to its strong interaction with bacterial membrane components. This study reports the first sulfoxide-group-containing polymer with excellent bactericidal activity (99.99%) and systematically investigates the effect of different functional groups on bactericidal activity.

Summary: This study reveals the peculiar isomerization propagation of benzyl vinyl ether with an electron-deficient acrylate in radical copolymerization. The backward isomerization of the radical species leads to a periodic consumption and allows the introduction of a benzyl ether structure in the resulting copolymer, leading to efficient degradation under acid conditions.

Summary: In this study, a poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) was synthesized through alternative ring-opening copolymerization. The results showed that PCHC blends with poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh) were miscible due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding. However, the weak hydrogen bonding interactions resulted in a negative deviation in the glass transition temperatures (T-g).

Summary: Mineralization of PVDF, VDF-co-HFP and ETFE in superheated water with an alkaline reagent was studied for fluorine element recycling. The polymers underwent defluorination to form fluoride ions at 250 degrees Celsius in an Ar atmosphere. The presence of O2 instead of Ar resulted in different products. Consecutive runs did not reduce the yield of fluoride ions. PVDF, VDF-co-HFP, and ETFE copolymers completely mineralized to form fluoride ions with yields of 95%, 100%, and 98%, respectively. Adding Ca(OH)2 to the reaction solutions produced artificial fluorspar.

Summary: Per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) can be divided into two families: low molar-mass PFASs, which are toxic and restricted, and polymeric ones. Fluoropolymers (FPs) are niche specialty bio-inert and safe polymers with outstanding properties, making them valuable and irreplaceable materials in many high tech applications. Despite the pressure faced by all PFASs, the concerns regarding industrial production of FPs have been addressed, highlighting their separation from conventional PFASs.

Summary: This study focuses on the one-step radiografting of flax fabrics with phosphonated and fluorinated polymer chains using (meth)acrylic monomers. The pre-irradiation procedure at 20 and 100 kGy allows the flax fabrics to have flame retardancy and hydro- and oleophobicity properties. The successful grafting of flax fibers is confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, while the morphology, regioselectivity of grafting, and distribution of elements are assessed by SEM-EDX.

Summary: Core-double-shell-structured nanocomposite films consisting of PVDF-g-BT incorporated into a P(VDF-co-HFP) copolymer matrix were prepared for energy storage applications. The addition of PVDF-g-BT improved the thermal stability and crystallinity of the films. The films exhibited three dielectric processes, and mechanical analysis confirmed the uniform distribution and strong interaction of PVDF-g-BT with the copolymer matrix. The suggested system shows promise for high-energy-density storage devices such as supercapacitors.

Summary: The dielectric properties of PVDF-g-BT core-shell structured nanocomposites obtained by RAFT polymerization were investigated. The dielectric constant increased with the addition of BT, exhibiting a larger increase than predicted by usual modeling methods for composite materials, due to the effect of the interfacial core-shell structure. PVDF's known dielectric relaxations were observed in both the neat polymer and its nanocomposites, unaffected by the presence of nanoparticles. A relaxation process due to interfacial polarization was found at higher temperatures, attributed to the high crystallinity of the materials produced by RAFT.
