Beta-guanidinopropionic acid has age-specific effects on markers of health and function in mice

Jonathan D. Dorigatti, Kevin M. Thyne, Brett C. Ginsburg, Adam B. Salmon

Summary: The study found that GPA intervention in young mice led to activation of the AMPK signaling pathway and various improvements in physiological parameters, while in old mice, although AMPK signaling activation was reduced, it still delayed age-related muscle tissue aging.

Testing the evidence that lifespan-extending compound interventions are conserved across laboratory animal model species

Michael Bene, Adam B. B. Salmon

Summary: A growing number of interventions have been found to extend the lifespan of laboratory animals. However, the extent to which these effects are conserved across species is unclear. This study analyzed published data on longevity interventions in Caenorhabditis and Drosophila, and found limited predictive value for identifying lifespan-extending compounds in mice. These results caution against assuming the translatability of lifespan-extending interventions across species, including humans.

Sexually dimorphic effects of methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA) on murine longevity and health span during methionine restriction

Kevin M. Thyne, Adam B. Salmon

Summary: Methionine restriction (MR) can extend lifespan, but it is not affected by the absence of MsrA. MR can also improve resistance to oxidative stress and reduce the risk of age-related pathologies. However, the presence or absence of MsrA does not significantly affect the effects of MR on longevity and health span.

Beta-guanidinopropionic acid does not extend Drosophila lifespan

Jonathan D. Dorigatti, Kevin M. Thyne, Brett C. Ginsburg, Adam B. Salmon

Summary: Activation of AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling has been shown to extend lifespan and improve healthspan across multiple species. However, supplementing fruit flies with beta-guanidinopropionic acid (GPA) did not extend lifespan and may actually have detrimental effects on stress resistance and lifespan, highlighting the importance of replication studies in the field of aging.
